Topic 1 - Musical Elements

➢ Music can be presented and performed in many ways.


➢ We make changes to different aspects of music make it more interesting.
➢ We can make these changes in music basically.

 Pitch- Music becomes higher or lower.

 Tempo- Music becomes faster or slower.

 Timbre- Music sounds different.

 Dynamics- Music becomes louder or softer

 Rhythm- Music contains longer or shorter notes.

Pitch ( Music becomes higher or lower )


1. Notes are on the same space which means they got the same pitch in the first picture.

2. In the second picture, notes are on the different lines and spaces, which means they got the different pitches of high
and low.

3. Tempo ( Music becomes faster or slower )

Tempo means speed of the music . It can be speed up or slow down or in a different speed.
4.What is timbre?
In music , timbre ( pronounced TAM-ber) describes the quality or character of a sound or voice.
5.Dynamics ( Music becomes louder or softer )
6.Rhythm ( Music contains longer or shorter notes)
Topic 2 Music & Patterns
Pattern means a short group of rhythm and melodies out of the whole music.

When we compose the rhythm, we can create the patterns too.

In every music or in every song , you can see the pattern in different ways which is called structure or form of music.
Structure or Form of music ( Music Patterns)

There are many kinds of structure and form in music.

Here are some structure and form.

1.Ostinato or Riff

The same melodies of the short piece of music is repeated throughout the music. An Ostinato is a short piece of music
which repeats throughout the song. Another word for Ostinato is Riff. The term Riff is
more commonly used in popular music. Below is a visual example of repeated pattern.

2.Call & Response or Verse & Chorus

The leader sings Verse ( Call ) and the group of people sing Chorus( Response ), sometimes singing the different parts
and sometimes singing the same words as leader does. Below is the visual example of Call & Response.

What is verse?

Verse means the group of same melodies with different words we can hear in a song , maybe two or more .

What is Chorus?

The most popular part of the song with beautiful melodies that people can recognize it easily.

3. Ternary form or ABA form

There are 3 sections in the song , but you can hear the first section again in the end like…….Section A + Section B +
Section A .It is also known as ABA form. Below is the visual example of Ternary form.
4. Canon

Canon can be sung in two , three or four parts, the same melody is begun in different parts, so that the imitations
overlap. The pattern of a canon can be visually represented as shown below.
Topic 3 Western Music & Accompaniment
A musical part (vocal or instrumental) that supports or provides background for other musical parts.

Modern Music Band & Instruments

Most modern music is made up of bass line, chords , a melody and a rhythm. A typical pop or rock band will consists
of a drummer, a bass guitarist, singer and a keyboard player.

Western Music Orchestra & Accompaniment

Bass means the lowest part of the music


a. In String family , double bass is bass instrument.
b. In wind family, bassoon is bass instrument.
c. In brass family, Tuba is bass instrument.

Easter Music & Accompaniment

Some of the instruments can play Chords and some can play note.

• Note - a musical sound ( a single note )

• Chord - two or more notes sounded together

Chinese Instruments

Sheng can play several notes at once, that provide the accompaniment to music. The sound of the Sheng is
played by blowing over vibrating reeds inside the instruments.

YangQin & Guzheng


Yangqin and guzheng are the Chinese instruments that can play chords or accompaniment.

- The sound of the yangqin is made by hammering on the tightly stretched string.

- The sound of the guzheng is made by plucking or strumming tightly stretched strings.

Malay Instrument that can play chord is Gambus


The gambus is similar to the western guitar, and is played by plucking or strumming the strings.

Indian Instrument Veena
The veena is an Indian stringed instrument that plays a drone . A drone is a single, long- held note, usually a bass note
which persists throughout the music. The veena can also be used to play chords to accompany songs or other music . It
is played by plucking or strumming the strings.
