The Romantic Poet
WILLIAM WORDSWORTH (7 APRIL 1770 - 23 APRIL 1850)

William Wordsworth was born on April 7, 1770 in Cockermouth,

Cumberland, located in the Lake District of England. This area was
closely associated with William Wordsworth for over 200 years after
his death.
He began writing poetry while in grammar school. Before graduating
his college, he went on a walking tour of Europe which deepened his
love for nature and his sympathy for the common man, both of
which are major themes in his poetry.
Wordsworth is best known for Lyrical Ballads, co-written with Samuel
Taylor Coleridge, and The Prelude, a Romantic epic poem chronicling
the "growth of a poet's mind".

"And sings a melancholy strain;"

The song's point : Loss

Time for oneself

Financial hardships leave the maiden no time

to spare for herself in order to make
the ends meet.
Singing is her outlet to let off the steam that has pent up
in her body due to the laborious work.
The significance purpose that was emphasised

Music transcends the barrier

of languages

Music is not restricted to one language.

In stanza 3, line 1 :

"Will no one tells me what she sings-"

The significance purpose that was emphasised

The tone and mood that was conveyed by the maiden.

Wordsworth devoted the entire stanza 2 to depict what her

singing sounds like.
"No Nightingale did ever chaunt
More welcome notes to weary bands
Of travellers in some shady haunt,
[ A Nightingale ]

Among Arabian sands:

A voice so thrilling ne'er was heard
In spring-time from the Cuckoo-bird,
Breaking the silence of the seas
Among the farthest Hebrides."

The significance purpose that was emphasised

The mood the maiden had created was depicted in the verse
below :

"Will no one tell me what she sings?—

Perhaps the plaintive numbers flow
For old, unhappy, far-off things,
And battles long ago:
Or is it some more humble lay,
Familiar matter of to-day?
Some natural sorrow, loss, or pain,
That has been, and may be again?"
