PHYS 1002 General Physics HW2

Note:
(1) Due: 3 Oct 2019 (Thu), 11:59pm
(2) You can submit the hardcopy either (i) directly to the instructor, or (ii) to the assignment
box outside SC 213. (Kind reminder: homework submitted to wrong box could result in
zero mark, because we cannot verify that you’ve submitted before the deadline.)
(3) Use 𝑔 = 9.81 m/s2 for gravitational acceleration throughout the problem set.
(4) Show the intermediate steps/maths.

1. A small uniform sphere of mass 𝑚 is released from rest

on a track. The initial height is ℎ. The sphere moves down
a slope, and moves in the inside of a circular section (with
radius 𝑅) of the track. The sphere barely completes the ℎ
loop, meaning that (i) the sphere never leaves the track 𝑅

during the vertical circular motion, and (ii) the sphere

would have fallen off if its speed is even slightly lower.

(a) Assume that the track is smooth. Express ℎ in terms of 𝑅.

(b) Assume that the track is rough, and the sphere rolls without slipping on the track.
Express ℎ in terms of 𝑅.
(c) After leaving the circular section, the sphere moves in a horizontal track. What is
the final speed of the sphere if
i. the track is smooth?
ii. the track is rough?

2. Block 1 (mass 𝑚1 ) and block 2 (mass 𝑚2 > 𝑚1 ) are hanged via a light
𝐹
inelastic string via a pulley (a uniform disk with mass 𝑀 and radius 𝑅).
The surface of the pulley is rough such that the string does not slip. The
pulley is free to rotate around the pivot. An upward force 𝐹 is applied to
𝑀, 𝑅
the pivot. The strings are long enough such that the blocks never hit the
pulley, and they remain taut throughout the motion.
𝑚1 𝑚2
(a) Draw the free-body diagrams for the blocks and the pulley.
(b) Find the acceleration of the pulley.
(c) Given 𝑚1 = 𝑀, 𝑚2 = 2𝑀, and 𝐹 = 4𝑀𝑔. What is the tension in the string?

3. Given a light rigid rod of length 1.0 m. One small sphere of mass 𝑀 = 1.0 kg is at one
end of the rod, and another small sphere of mass 2𝑀 is at another end. The rod is
pivoted at the middle, and it can rotate in the horizontal plane. A constant torque is
applied to the rod so that it accelerates uniformly. The rod starts from rest (at 𝑡 = 0 s),
and it completes three circles in 15 s.

(a) What is the rotational inertia of the rod about the pivot?
(b) What is the angular acceleration of the rod?
(c) What is the torque on the rod?
(d) What is the rotational kinetic energy of the object at 𝑡 = 15 s?
[25 marks]

4. A uniform rod AB of mass 𝑀 = 25 kg and length 2.5 m is supported by two vertical

strings at its ends. The rod is horizontal, and it carries a box of 𝑚 = 15 kg, as shown in
the following figure. Assume that the strings are weightless.

2.5 m

0.75 m

A 25 kg B

15 kg

(a) Find the tension 𝑇A by taking moments at point B.

(b) Find the tension 𝑇B by taking moments at point A.
(c) Verify that the net force on the rod is zero.
(d) It is possible to adjust the hanging point of the box. It is given that the breaking
tension of each string is 250 N. Find the positions at which the box could be hung
without breaking either string.

5. This is an extra challenge question. No mark is assigned to this question.

In the lecture note, Chapter 2, page 17, it is given that the moment of inertia of “a thin
rod about axis through centre perpendicular to length” is
1
𝐼centre = 𝑀𝐿2 .
12
Starting with the expression of 𝐼centre , derive the expression in question 4:
1
𝐼end = 𝑀𝐿2 .

Hint: Pull the trick on page 28 of the lecture note.
