1.Let’s practice the conversation:
O verbo to be equivale aos verbos ser e/ou estar em português. A conjugação do verbo to be no
presente do indicativo é:

She is pretty. (ela é linda – trata-se de uma mulher)
He is handsome. (ele é lindo – trata-se de um homem)
It is pretty. (neste caso, o sentido seria (Ele é lindo/Ela é linda) sendo que ele ou ela não se
refere a pessoas, entretanto não é possível saber exatamente do que se trata porque não há
um contexto.
Agora, se considerarmos:
The dog is big. It is pretty. – neste caso sabe-se que o pronome it refere-se ao cachorro.
2. A segunda pessoa do singular recebe o mesmo tratamento (you are) que a segunda pessoa
do plural (you are). Desta forma, será o contexto da frase que indicará o plural ou o singular.
Exemplos:
You are happy. – Você está feliz ou Vocês estão felizes.
Só é possível saber se o pronome you refere-se ao plural ou ao singular se a sentença estiver
inserida em um contexto.
