Sample Lesson Plan For Inquiry-Based Approach

This lesson plan summarizes a science lesson on hot spots for 10th grade students. The objectives are for students to: 1) Relate hot spots to plate tectonics, 2) Demonstrate what hot spots look like through an experiment, and 3) Identify the role of mantle plumes in hot spots. Students will perform an experiment using an alcohol lamp, test tube, water, and paper to simulate a hot spot and boiling water. They will then answer questions about the experiment and discuss how it demonstrates the relationship between hot spots, plate tectonics, and mantle plumes.

SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 10

Date: October 15, 2016

Grade & Time Slot: Grade 10 – Camia (1:00-2:00PM)

I. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students are able to:
1. Relate Hot Spot with Plate tectonics;
2. Demonstrate how areas considered as hot spot looks like through an experiment;
3. Identify the role of mantle plume in hot spot
II. Subject Matter: Hot Spot
Reference: Science Grade 10 K-12 Learner’s Module, pp. 31-32
Material/s: Alcohol Lamp with lighter, Test tube, water, white bond paper and test tube holder
III. Procedures:
A. Review
Let the students recall about the possibilities of geologic activities in the middle of the
tectonic plate.
B. Motivation
Ask students if they’ve heard the term “Hot Spot”. If yes, let them describe on their own
words all they know about hot spot. If no, ask them if they also wonder what it is. Tell them
that they are going to create their own Hot Spot Experiment to be able to understand what
really a Hot Spot is.

c. Lesson Proper
I. The Hot Spot
1. Ask students if they wanted to see what a hot spot is.
2. Give the students the procedures for the experiment that will show them the
concepts behind the hot spot.
3. Using the prepared materials let them perform the experiment. But before that,
remind them of the precautionary measures when dealing with fire in an
experiment.
4. After 30 minutes, let them finalize their activity output and review their results.
5. After that, ask them the following questions regarding their experiment:
a. What happens when you heated the water inside the test tube?
b. What happens to your paper as the water starts boiling?
c. What is being represented by your white bond paper? the boiling water?
d. What have you notice when you moved the white bond paper 1 inch to the right?
6. Discuss some points about their experiment and about hot spot.
II Making Generalization
.
1. What is the relationship between the occurrence of a hot spot area to Plate
tectonics?
2. What is the role of a mantle plume in hot spot?
3. How will you describe a Hot Spot?
III.  ASSIGNMENT
1. Make a post-lab reflection.
2. Prepare for the short follow up quiz tomorrow
