Hair Removal

Chapter 22
The most common form of hair removal in salons and spas is waxing,
although there are many new methods coming into play

Pg 738
Men are now requesting hair removal services; nape of neck, chest,
and back are the most frequent requests

Pg 738
Clients with an overabundance of hair are the best candidates for hair
removal
Hirsuties
(hypertrichosis) Hirsutism
is the growth of an unusual amount of hair on parts of the
body that normally has downy hair (on the face of women
when that growth or coverage
or backs of men). is excessive

Pg 738
All of the various approaches to hair removal fall into two major
categories: Permanent and Temporary. Salon techniques are generally
limited to the temporary methods.

Learning the proper hair removal techniques and performing

them safely makes you an even more important part of a
client’s beauty regimen Pg 738
Consultation
Ask the client to complete the Client Intake
form. This is a questionnaire that discloses all
medication both topical and oral, along with
known medical issues, skin disorders, or
allergies that may affect treatment. Some
medical conditions and medications may
cause thinning of skin or make skin more
vulnerable to injury. Waxing could cause
unnecessary inflammation or sever injury to
the skin.

Contraindications that can prevent a client from being a candidate for hair
removal include:
- prescribed medications such as antidepressants, hormones, cortisone
- medication for blood pressure, diabetes, blood thinning
- topical prescriptions like Retin-A, Renova, and hydroquinone

Pg 743-44
Permanent Hair Removal
3 Methods:

Electrolysis - removal of hair by means of

an electric current that destroys the growth
cells of hair; must be performed by a
licensed electrologist

Photoepilation (intense pulsed light) - uses

intense light to destroy the growth cells of
the hair follicles
Permanent Hair Removal

Laser Hair Removal - a laser beam is

pulsed on the skin, impairing hair growth

*An absolute requirement for this option is that the client’s hair must be
darker than the surrounding skin. *Coarse, dark hair responds best to laser
treatment. *This method requires specialized training, most commonly
offered by laser equipment manufacturer’s
Pg 744
Temporary Hair Removal
Shaving - the most common form of temporary hair removal, particularly
of men’s facial hair

Pg 744-45
Temporary Hair Removal Pg 744-45

Tweezing - using tweezers to remove hair;

commonly used to shape eyebrows; used to remove
undesirable hairs from around the mouth and chin

Note:
The natural arch of the eyebrow follows the orbital bone
(curved line of the eye socket). Hair can grow above
and below the natural line. When tweezing, these hairs
should be removed to give a clean and attractive
appearance.
Temporary Hair Removal
Depilatories - a caustic alkali preparation (substance) used for temporary
removal of superfluous hair by dissolving it at the skin’s surface. They can
be inflammatory to skin and should not be used on clients with sensitive
skin or contraindications for waxing.

Patch test depilatory products on the client’s skin

prior to the first time on a hairless part of the arm.
Apply a small amount, and leave on the skin for
7-10 minutes. If no redness, swelling, or rash
appears.. it is safe to use over a larger area of
skin.
Pg 745-46
Temporary Hair Removal
Epilators - remove hair from the bottom of the follicle (which means it takes
hair longer to grow back). Time between waxings is generally 4-6 weeks.

Wax is a commonly used epilator and is available in two forms: Hard and Soft

Soft Wax is applied to skin, then removed using

fabric strips
Hard Wax is thicker and does not require fabric
strips for removal

Hair should be at least 1/4” long for effective waxing, shorter hair may not
adhere to the wax. Hair longer than 1/2” should be trimmed, then waxed.

Pg 745
Temporary Hair Removal
Brazilian Bikini Waxing - a technique that
requires the removal of all the hair from the front
and back of the bikini area

Tips!

• When done properly, the hair will not feel like beard stubble as it grows out
• Make sure the client fills out the client intake & release forms
• Wear disposable gloves to prevent contact with bloodborne pathogens
• Apply an aloe gel or cool compress to calm/sooth areas with redness or
swelling
• Never double dip!
Pg 746-47

Threading (banding) - is a temporary removal method where cotton thread is
twisted and rolled along the surface of the skin, entwining hair in the thread
and lifting it from the follicle
