Learning Activity Sheets Mathematics 9 Quarter 3-Week 3

1. The document provides examples and explanations for finding the length of the midline/median of a trapezoid and the area of a kite using given side lengths. 2. Activities include identifying parts of trapezoids and kites, solving problems to find missing side lengths or areas, and determining whether statements about kites are true or false. 3. The final activity asks to determine side lengths of a figure called MINE given certain conditions relating the sides, and find the area of kite EFGH, but no side lengths are given for that kite.

Title of activity: Finding length of a midline/ median of a trapezoid

Finding area and the missing sides of a kite.

Topic 1
The midline or median of a trapezoid is parallel to its bases, and its length is half the sum of the
length of the bases.
A B
The figure at the right is trapezoid ABCD

and are the bases. E F

and are the legs.
// //
Point E is the midpoint of and point D C
F isthe midpoint of
is the midline or median of a trapezoid

Sample 1: Given ROME at the right. Find

PA. R 12 cm O
1

PA (RO + EM)
2
=
1
= (12 + 18)
2
1
= (30) P A
2
PA = 15 M
cm E
18
cm

Sample 2: Refer to the figure at the right: Trapezoid APEX with median TI.
Given: A P
AP = 3x + 3
TI = 4x + 2
and EX = 6x T I
–2
Find TI
X E
Solution: TI = ½ (AP + EX)
4x + 2 = ½ [(3x + 3) + (6x -2)]
4x + 2 = ½ (9x +1)
2(4x +2) = ½ (9x + 1)2 (multiplying both sides by 2 in order to eliminate the
denominator.) 8x + 4 =9x + 1
4 -1 = 9x – 8x
3 = x or
x = 3 units
therefore, TI = 4x +
2
= 4 (3) + 2 substituting the value of x which is 3.
= 12 + 2
TI = 14 units
Activity 1. Using trapezoid CAKE at the right.
Identify what is asked:

1. The bases of trapezoid CAKE

CA and EK.

2. The legs of Trapezoid CAKE are

CF and AK.

3. The median of Trapezoid CAKE is OT.

Activity 2: Problem Solving: Refer to Trapezoid CAKE above (3 points each).

1. AC = 16 and EK = 20, solve OT. 4. AC = 2x + 1, OT = 5x + 1, and EK = 3x – 2. OT =?

OT = 1/2 (AC + EK) 5x + 1= 1/2 (2x + 1 + 3x – 2)
= 1/2 (16 + 20) 5x + 1= 1/2 (5x-1)
= 1/2 (36) 2(5x+1) = (5x+1)
OT = 18 10x+2= 5x+1
=5x-1; x= 1/5
OT= 5(1/5)+1
OT= 2

2. AC = 12 and EK = 15, solve OT. 5. AC =4x, OT = 5x - 1 and EK = 5x + 3. OT =?

OT= ½ (AC + EK) 5x - 1= 1/2 (4x + 5x+3)
OT= ½ (12 +15) 5x - 1= 1/2 (9x+3)
OT= ½ (27) 2(5x-1) = (9x+3)
OT= 13.5 10x-2= 9x+3
=x-5; x= 5
OT= 5(5)-1
OT= 24
3. OT = 40 and AC = 28, solve EK.
40= ½ (28 + EK)
2(40)= (28+EK)
80=28+EK
EK=80-28
EK= 52

Topic 2
Kite is a quadrilateral that is neither a parallelogram nor trapezoid. It has two pairs of
consecutive
congruent side. One diagonal of a kite is the perpendicular bisector of the other diagonal. Opposite
sides of a KITE are never congruent. However, only a pair of opposite angles are congruent in a
kite.

The diagonals of a kite are perpendicular.

The area of a kite is half the product of the length of its diagonal.

̅
In a kite ABCD, ̅̅ 
̅
̅ ̅ and
̅
̅̅ 
̅ ̅ . The segments ̅̅̅and ̅̅̅are its diagonals.Area of kite
ABCD = area of ∆ABD + area ∆BCD or
1
Kite ABCD 2 (BD) (AC)
=

Sample 1. AC = 12 units and BD = 8 units, find the area of kite ABCD. Refer to
the figure at the right.
1
Solutions: Kite (BD) (AC)
2
ABCD = 1
= (8) (12)
2
1
= (96)
2
= 48 square units

Sample 2: EC = 6, AB = 5 and EB = 4. Solve for the

following;

1. AE = ? 3. AC=? 5. Area of kite

ABCD. 2. BD =? 4. BC =?

Solution:
1. Since AB = 5 and EB = 4, then we will 3. AC = (AE + CE)
use the Pythagorean theorem to solve for =3+6
AE which is c2 = a2 + b2. = 9 units
(AB)2 = (AE)2 + (BE)2
(5)2 = (AE)2 + (4)2
25 = (AE)2 + 16
25 – 16 =(AE)2 4. To find BC use
9 = (AE)2 extracting square root. Pythagorean theorem.
√9 = AE Follow procedure problem
3 = AE or 1.
AE = 3 units

5. since AC = 9 ang BD
2. since BE = 4, then =8
So, area of kite ABCD =
BD = 2(EB) (9)
= 2(4) =
= 8 units. = 36(72
square
units.

Activity 1: Determine whether each statement is true or false. If false, give your
justification/explanation.

True 1. A kite is a polygon.

False, quadrilaterals may either be a square, rectangle or rhoumbus 2. Every quadrilateral is a kite.
False, it should be half of the product of the length of diagonals 3. The area of a kite is equal to the
product of the length of its diagonals.
True 4. One of the diagonals of a kite is a perpendicular bisector of the other diagonal.
True 5. A kite has two distinct pairs of congruent consecutive sides.
True 6. A kite may have a right angle.

Activity 2: Quadrilateral EFGH is a kite. ̅𝐹̅𝐻̅ and ̅𝐸̅𝐺are the diagonals. Complete each statement.

7. ∆EFG is a/ an equilateral triangle.

8. The measure of FIG is equal to FIE .
9. If mEIH + mGIF is 180 degrees..
10. If mHEI is 60, then mEHG is 120.

Activity 3: Determine the length of the sides of MINE given the following conditions. Show your
solution if applicable.

1. If IM = 6, IN = 14, then EM = 6 and EN = 14 .

2. If IN = 12, EN = 12.

3. If IN = 16 and MI = 16, then ME = 16 and EN = 16 .

4. If IN = 2x – 9 and EN = x + 4, then x = 13 and ET = 17 .

5. If ME = 4X – 5 and IM = 2(x + 3), then IM = 6.

6. Find the area of kite EFGH.

 No given sides for kite EFGH.
