What is Cyber Security?
Cyber security is the practice of defending computers,
servers, mobile devices, electronic systems, networks,
and data from malicious attacks.

Network Security

The practice of securing a computer network from

intruders, whether targeted attackers or opportunistic
malware.
Application Security

Focuses on keeping software and devices free of threats.

A compromised application could provide access to the

data its designed to protect.

Successful security begins in the design stage, well before

a program or device is deployed.
Information Security

Protects the integrity and privacy of data, both in

storage and in transit.
Operational Security

Includes the processes and decisions for handling and

protecting data assets.
The permissions users have when accessing a
network and the procedures that determine how and
where data may be stored or shared all fall under this
umbrella.
What are the benefits of
cybersecurity?
• Business protection against cyberattacks and data
breaches.
• Protection for data and networks.
• Prevention of unauthorized user access.
• Improved recovery time after a breach.
• Protection for end users and endpoint devices.
What are the benefits of
cybersecurity?
• Business continuity.
• Improved confidence in the company's reputation
and trust for developers, partners, customers,
stakeholders and employees.
The scale of the cyber threat
• A report by RiskBased Security revealed that a
shocking 7.9 billion records have been exposed by
data breaches in the first nine months of 2019
alone.
• This figure is more than double (112%) the number
of records exposed in the same period in 2018.
Types of cyber threats
1. Cybercrime includes single actors or groups
targeting systems for financial gain or to cause
disruption.
2. Cyber-attack often involves politically motivated
information gathering.
3. Cyberterrorism is intended to undermine
electronic systems to cause panic or fear.
Common methods used to threaten
cyber-security
• Malware
– Malware means malicious software.
Types of Malware

Virus: A self-replicating program that attaches itself to

clean file and spreads throughout a computer system,
infecting files with malicious code.

Trojans: A type of malware that is disguised as legitimate

software. Cybercriminals trick users into uploading Trojans
onto their computer where they cause damage or collect
data.
Types of Malware

Spyware: A program that secretly records what a user

does, so that cybercriminals can make use of this
information. For example, spyware could capture credit
card details.

Ransomware: Malware which locks down a user’s

files and data, with the threat of erasing it unless a
ransom is paid.
Types of Malware

Adware: Advertising software which can be used to

spread malware.
Phishing
• Phishing is when cybercriminals target victims with
emails that appear to be from a legitimate company
asking for sensitive information.
• Phishing attacks are often used to dupe people into
handing over credit card data and other personal
information.
6 ways to detect a phishing email
1. The message is sent from a public email
domain
– No legitimate organisation will send emails from an
address that ends ‘@gmail.com’.
Example 1

2. The domain name is misspelt
– The problem is that anyone can buy a domain name
from a registrar. And although every domain name must
be unique, there are plenty of ways to create addresses
that are indistinguishable from the one that’s being
spoofed.
6 ways to detect a phishing email
3. The email is poorly written
– You can often tell if an email is a scam if it contains poor
spelling and grammar.
Example

4. It includes suspicious attachments or links
– No matter how phishing emails are delivered, they all
contain a payload. This will either be an infected
attachment that you’re asked to download or a link to a
bogus website.
– The purpose of these payloads is to capture sensitive
information, such as login credentials, credit card
details, phone numbers and account numbers.

5. The message creates a sense of urgency
– Scammers know that most of us procrastinate. We
receive an email giving us important news, and we
decide we’ll deal with it later.

6. Legit companies don’t request your sensitive
information via email
– Chances are if you receive an unsolicited email from an
institution that provides a link or attachment and asks
you to provide sensitive information, it’s a scam.
– Most companies will not send you an email asking for
passwords, credit card information, credit scores, or tax
numbers, nor will they send you a link from which you
need to login.
Example
Man-in-the-middle attack
• A man-in-the-middle attack is a type of cyber threat
where a cybercriminal intercepts communication
between two individuals in order to steal data.
• For example, on an unsecure WiFi network, an
attacker could intercept data being passed from the
victim’s device and the network.
Denial-of-service attack
• A denial-of-service attack is where cybercriminals
prevent a computer system from fulfilling legitimate
requests by overwhelming the networks and servers
with traffic.
• This renders the system unusable, preventing an
organization from carrying out vital functions.
Cyber safety tips - protect yourself
against cyberattacks
1. Update your software and operating system
2. Use anti-virus software
3. Use strong passwords
4. Do not open email attachments from unknown senders
5. Do not click on links in emails from unknown senders or unfamiliar websites

6. Avoid using unsecure WiFi networks in public places
