October 22, 2015. Directed by: Chuck Gutierrez, that solidifies his reputation on the business by doing a
film on this caliber. My expectations are on the roof since I already watched a film of the director
entitled “Palawan Fate” last 2011. He and his team often produced some movies that’s well-knowned
for its cinematography and iconography–those are also what I’m expecting for this, since I love his
decisions in camera angles, and how he approaches different scenes on his last movie that I watched.
This movie didn’t have the typical style of approach in terms of using dialogues. I think, it’s an
intentional decision of the director to make the audience interpret the situation and let their brain run–
to think of some possible lines that would fit the scenes. This might be a unique way of approach, but
I’m sure some audiences might find it quite boring. Even though this is the case, the movie begins with a
high-angle shot of a man crawling for life that definitely catches some attention from the viewers–just
like myself. I even think of some possible reasons why it starts like this, and the first idea that comes to
my mind is the possibility of a flashback, but it all changed when I noticed some edited red blood on the
right portion of the face of a survivor/his comrade. The second idea that comes through my mind is the
possibility of an aftermath from a war since the background filter (special effects) of the scene is
perfectly fit for a scene like this. Even though I’m not entirely sure what happened, I could feel through
their emotions and actions that they have experienced something tragic–since the next scene is where
they one by one help each other to stand and rescue those who are still unconscious.
One of the actors on this scene is Mon Confiado, and his performance on this scene is something to
point out–his professionalism really stands out. His facial reaction and even his body
movements/gestures are really fitted for his character (a military officer). While this is happening the
transition of effects is neatly done while the unit is cleaning themselves, but the first sign of the movie
pops out when a child from a far cries for help–a indicator that something happened. After some
seconds of frames where the casualty of the natural disaster is visible, the second sign of the movie
showed up–the fallen cross which could mean death. But after the rescuing of the civilians some of them
also helps out to carry the fallen cross and take it on the montain’s top. This is the third sign of the
movie that could means hope and a new beginning.
The transition after this is decently done that leads to the next scene, which is the visibility of the fallen
victims of the natural pneumonia. This also clears out what happens to them and creates another
conflict–where should they burry those dead bodies? A day passed by and a new character named
Monir has been introduced. I think he’s a caring father to his children and has a strong personality, since
he easily adopted on the given situation. But there’s a problem between him and the main protagonist–
Ross. Then afterwards, a few seconds of sound from a flute engulfed the entire village that becomes the
background music and as a transition as well to my assumption that validates by the next scene where a
child named “Langit” (daughter of Monir) asked a confusing question to Ross (are you still our teacher?).
This is also the reason why I concluded that there’ll be a conflict between the two of them ladder in the
movie. After this scene is a fast transition of a longshot that reveals the connection of Ross and Lance
(husband of Ross), but I didn’t expect them to talk about divorce as soon as their first main scene.
The next scene after a transition of a loud thunder strikes (background sounds) on the movie is a
disappoinment for me, since Lance had dead while traveling through his parents house. The natural
acting skills of Angeli Bayani that plays as Ross is so pnenominal, her soft yet sweet cries touched my
heart. And as a wife she decided to bring the dead body of his husband through his family’s house–a
ironic decision since Lance’s didn’t like any of her decisions in life. The next scene started with a
flashback that explains why Monir is quite distant towards Ross even though they’re old friends. A
cinematography of the casualties of the natural disasters becomes the transition for the next scene,
where there’s a black background that really helps to emphasize the audience’s view towards the focal
point of the frame which are Ross and Lance having their farewell.
The next scene starts with an alternation of low angle shot and dutch angle shot between Ross and
Lance’s mother, and I really didn’t expect Ross and Lance to have a child to take good care of–been
shown together with Lance’s mother. But she’ll eventually get her son after the raid due to some issue
of food supplies. Even though it’s irritating to think of getting your son and get killed after a second raid
to a warehouse of National Food Authority (NFA), I think it really suits as the ending of the story since
she dies besides Monir and solve their conflict. The ending of the movie is so tragic yet it is fulfilling as
well, since all conflicts of the movie have been solved already, even though the cost of it are the lives of
the two protagonists. Even though the movie doesn’t meet my expectations, the director and his team
did a great job in filming this movie. The clean transitions and the special effects of the movie are
something to take note of, and if there will be a lesson on this movie then I think it should be: “A thief is
a thief, whether he steals a diamond or a cucumber.”
