STABILITY AND OPERATIONS

No 07 (Oct 06)

Q1

1. (a)(i) Trim

 Definition: The difference between the Forward and After

Draughts measured in metres.

(ii) Moment to Change the Trim by one Centimetre (MCTC)

 Definition: The moment required to change the vessels trim by

one centimetre at that draught.

(iii) Longitudinal Centre of Buoyancy

 Definition: Is the point longitudinally, where all the upthrusts due

to buoyancy may be considered to act vertically upwards.

(iv) Longitudinal Centre of Floatation

 Definition: The LCF is the point about which the vessel trims and
it is sometimes called the “tipping centre”. The LCF is the
geometric centre of the waterplane area (at that draught).

(b) To Calculate LCG by Taking Moments about the After Perpendicular

Weights (m) LCG (m) Moments about the AP (tm)

Loaded Discharged Loaded Discharged
12 748  0 69.2 882162.00  -
300 132.0 - 39600.00
300  0 35.0 10500.00  -
13048 300   892662.00 39600.00
-300     -39600.00
12748     853062.00

LCG = Σ Moments about the AP = 853062 = 66.917m foap

From Hydrostatic Tables using ∆ of 12748 tonnes

EK draught 6.100 m
MCTC 172.5
LCB (foap) 70.35 m
LCF (foap) 68.20 m
+ LCG (foap) 66.917m

LCB = 70.35m
B
AP 70.93m G
LCG = 66.917m FP

CF

LCF = la = 68.20m
lf = (142 – 68.20) = 73.80m

LBP = L = 142m

To Calculate the Change of Trim

CoT = ∆ x (LCB ~ LCG) = 12748 x (70.35 ~ 66.917)

MCTC 172.5

= 253.5 cms = 2.535 m by the stern

To Calculate the Change of Draught due to Change of Trim

CoDf due to CoT = CoT x LBP – LCF = 2.535 x (142 – 68.20) = - 1.317m
LBP 142

CoDa due to CoT = CoT x LCF = 2.535 x 68.20 = + 1.218m

LBP 142
check 2.535m 
To find the Final Draughts

Fwd Aft
EK draughts 6.100 6.100m
CoD due to CoT - 1.317m + 1.218m
Final draughts 4.883m 7.418m

The final draughts are: FWD 4.88 m

AFT 7.42 m

Q2

(a) (i) Initial Metacentric Height (GM)

 Definition: It is the distance measured along the centreline

between G and M in the initial upright position.

(ii) Centre of Buoyancy (B).

 Definition: Centre of Buoyancy is the point in a floating body

through which the force of buoyancy is considered to act
vertically upwards.

It is situated at the geometric centre of the underwater volume. It's

position is denoted by 'B' and it's height above the keel (K) is denoted
KB.

(b) From GZ Curve

(i) Range of Stability 0º - 72º (72º)

(ii) Maximum GZ 1.34m
(iii) Angle of Maximum GZ 45.5º
(iv) Angle of Vanishing Stability 72º
(v) Initial GM 1.10m
(vi) Angle of Deck Edge Immersion 23º

(c) KM 10.77 m
KG 9.78 m
GM 0.99 m

MSS = ∆ x GZ

= ∆ x GM Sin θ

= 12 456 x 099 x Sin 7º

MSS = 1 502.8 tm

The Moment of Statical Stability is 1 502.8 tonne metres
