Introduction
 There are wide ranges and varieties of plant

and machinery being deployed and used on
constructions sites.
 Accidents involving plant and machinery are

often severe and some cases fatal.

Introduction
Typical Plant & Machinery
 Bulldozers.
 Earth graders.
 Mobile cranes.
 Concrete pumps.
 Dumpers, etc.

Typical Hazards
Mechanical Hazards
• Entanglement - rotating shafts, pulleys,

sprockets and gears.
 Crushing - hard surfaces moving together.
 Severing - scissors or shear action.

 Cutting or puncturing -
sharp edges/ends.
 Slips, trips or falls -

cable of hose
connection/oil leaks,
etc.

 Exposure/inhaling dust,

General Control Measures
Planning & Preparation
 Valid certificate of fitness and
competent operator for

certificated plant and
machinery.
 Trained operators for plant and

machinery for other than
certificated machinery.

 Manufacturer ’s specification/safe operating

procedures for plant and machinery
operations.
 Log-book for individual plant and machinery.

Prior to Operation
 Operators to conduct daily
inspection and record in the log
book.
 Inspection must include the

mechanical parts and non-
mechanical parts.
 Log-book for individual plant

and machinery.

Prior to Operation
 Any damage or faulty part reported to superior.
 Check site condition; identif routes to be used

and determine requirements for temporary traffic
management.
 Check locations of underground services and

overhead power lines.

Prior to Operation
 Operators are provided with appropriate PPE.
 Post suitable and appropriate warning signs at

conspicuous locations.
 Ensure those working in the vicinity are

informed and wearing high visibility clothing.

During Operation
 Operators are wearing appropriate PPE at all

time.
 Ensure guards and other means of protection
are not removed.
 Comply with manufacturer ’s specification/ safe

operating procedures at all time.

During Operation
 Keep travel speed slow
enoug to maintain control.
 Be aware of other
workers, plant and
machinery in the area.

During Operation
 Do not reverse unless there is
a clear view or assisted by a
banksman.
 Never leave plant/machinery
running and unattended;
remove keys when not in use
.

Working Near Plant/Machinery
 Wear high visibility clothing.
 Know the work operation; the direction the plant

or machinery will be coming or going.
 Watch the operator when moving into area;

make an eye contact with him.

Working Near Plant/Machinery
 Stand well clear of revolving, reversing,

swinging and turning plant or machinery.
 Be aware of plant or machinery sound, horn, or

reversing alarm.

Upon Completion
 Always leave or park in safe location, easily

seen and secured; particularly when left
overnight.
 Remove all posted warning signs.

Maintenance
 Repairing and servicing to be carried out by
competent person and recorded.
 Before commencing, ensure plant or

machinery is safely and securely parked.
 Do not carry out temporary or patch up

repairs.

 Watch out for hot lubricants, components
and parts.
 When leaving plant or machinery, isolate

controls and remove key.
 Immediately clean up any oil spillages.
