Professionalism and Morality

VE023
MODULE 2
Professionalism

 Professionalism is the conduct, behavior and attitude of someone in a

work or business environment.
 It leads to workplace success, a strong professional reputation and a high
level of work ethic and excellence.
Morality defined

 Beliefs about what is right behavior and what is wrong behavior; the
degree to which something is right and good; the moral goodness
and badness of something (Merriam-Webster Dictionary)
Let us understand

 Professional Ethics refers to the

ideals and aspirations as well as
rules of conduct in professional (all
working) spaces.
 This is a topic of concern for all
members of society. It has special
effect on certain aspects of
modern society, its role in the life
of the individual professional, and
its implications for ethical theory.
 Unlike values, professional ethics are
often codified as a set of rules, which
a particular group of people use.
 This means that all those in a particular
group will use the same professional
ethics, even though their values may
be unique to each person.
 Ethical principles may differ
depending on the profession; for
example, professional ethics that
relate to medical practitioners will
differ from those that relate to lawyers
or real estate agents.
 The Social Importance of Professional
Ethics. We live in the modern world.
Imagine how a modern society could
function without the smooth operation
of the professions.
 Professionals occupy a strategic
position in the modern society. They
provide services not available from
other quarters, and the services are
vital to those who receive them – the
clients.
 However, there are some universal ethical principles that apply across all professions,
including:
 honesty
 trustworthiness
 loyalty
 respect for others
 adherence to the law
 doing good and avoiding harm to others
 accountability.

Let’s get started

 Is Maturity defined by age? Is it by social factor? Or by

economic factor?
Maturity

 Maturity is defined as the state of being fully grown.

 Broadly, maturity is the ability to respond to a situation
in an age-appropriate manner.
 when someone is mature, they have the ability to make
good decisions on their own, without being guided to
them by a parent or another adult.
Professional Maturity

 ability to respect other people's diversified cultural backgrounds and

unique set of experiences in the workplace.
 Becoming more professional at work begins with having a positive attitude
toward the job.
 Professionally mature employees are able to control their personal feelings
when it comes to work related issues.
 Building professional maturity in the workplace will not only lead to fulfilling
career success, it will lead to better self-reflection.
Five (5) Steps to become Professional
Maturity

 1. Live by a strong set of values, ethics and morals.

 2. Check in with your feelings and create a strategy to deal with them.
(Example: It bothers you when a coworker does X. When X happens,
establish the best way to control your feelings).
 3. Be coachable. Positively accept feedback.
 4. Follow the rules.
 5. Keep your commitment in the workplace, it is important to display
positive behaviors. People could misjudge you and minimize your work
due to professional immaturity.
