(MELC): Compose an argumentative essay

Through World Literature

*Background information for learners:

Argumentative essay- is a type of essay that presents arguments about both sides of an issue. It
could be that both sides are presented equally balanced, or it could be that one side is presented
more forcefully than the other. It all depends on the writer, and what side he supports the most.

Characteristics of a good argumentative essay:

1. Concise- Be selective and effective in your choice of ideas.
2. Precise- Be specific in vocabulary and connect words to get your point across.
3. Consistent- Choose a viewpoint and stick to it. Avoid contradiction in your argument.
4. Coherent- Plan your essay- use paragraphs and connecting words to link ideas
5. Cultured- Provide evidence of cultural awareness- appropriate examples and making
comparison with another country or culture.

Elements of an argumentative essay:

1. Claim- a statement of opinion, this is the topic of your argument
2. Evidence- refers to the proofs or facts that support your claim
3. Counterargument- an argument that your readers would make if they disagreed with your claim
4. Rebuttal- your response to the counterargument
5. Conclusion- a strong restatement of the original claim

Parts of an argumentative essay:

1. Introduction- The first paragraph of your essay should outline the topic, provide background
information necessary to understand your argument, outline the evidence you will present and state
your thesis. The thesis statement is a concise, one-sentence summary of your main point and claim.
2. Body paragraph 1- The first body paragraph discusses the first and most important point related
to the argument. It starts with a topic sentence and has all the data to make the argument
convincing
3. Body paragraph 2- The second body paragraph mentions the second most important element
of the argument. A topic sentence is used to start these paragraphs that give the idea of the point
that will be discussed in the following paragraph.
4. Body paragraph 3- The third body paragraph discusses the all the miscellaneous points and uses
a transitional sentence at the end to show relation to the conclusion.
5. Conclusion- The writer reiterates all the major elements of an argumentative essay and also
restates the thesis statement using a more convincing choice of words.

Students Who Study Abroad Achieve Greater Success

Much of our learning takes place outside the classroom. We learn how to maintain budgets,
forge friendships, develop business relationships, and more. Imagine extending those skills on a
global level. We would immediately cease to believe the world only contains the people and things
we can see but, rather, a wide variety of opinions, customs, beliefs, and ethics. This is why every
college-level student must study abroad during their undergraduate years. They will learn more in
that semester abroad than in any other academic year.

According to IES Abroad, a company that encourages students to become international

leaders, students who study abroad are more likely to be accepted into the graduate degree
program of their choice. In fact, 90% of students who studied abroad with IES are admitted to their
first or second choice for graduate school. Imagine walking into an interview and being able to
discuss preparing the most popular dish in India or organizing the best route to take from Sydney,
Australia to Perth. Not only does this strike up a memorable conversation, but it also demonstrates
a student’s fierce independence and determination. All this makes someone who has studied
abroad a more desirable candidate for their dream job. As if IES Abroad’s statistic above was not
astounding enough, it has been proven that 97% of students who study abroad find employment
within 12 months of graduation (Smith, 2019, p. 17).

Beyond college, students who study abroad will be better equipped to succeed in the
workplace. Their broadened worldview will help them relate to their co-workers, especially in a
worldwide organization. This increased scope of knowledge allows 25% of students who study
abroad to receive higher starting salaries. That is clear evidence that their experiences and views
are valued by employers.
 In spite of all these benefits, some parents simply will not allow their children to study abroad.
A portion will argue that it is not safe. Others will argue that studying abroad costs too much money.
In these cases, it is important to take a look at one semester’s financial aid statement. How much
does it cost to be a student at a local university? When tuition, housing, textbooks, transportation,
and meal plans are considered, it becomes difficult to argue that there’s a stark difference in the
cost of a semester at home versus a semester abroad.

Studying abroad will have long-lasting, positive implications on a student’s future as an

academic and a professional. New windows of opportunity will be flung open the moment an
undergraduate boards a plane. Why not make an appointment with the study abroad center at
your university? You have nothing to lose by starting a conversation today.

3. The fourth paragraph contains the counterarguments to the author’s claim. What are these?

The Menstrual Cycle is the time from one period to another usually by 28 days. The day count for
menstrual cycle begins on the first day of menstruation when blood starts to come out of the
vagina. The entire duration of a Menstrual Cycle can be divided into four main phases.

Menstrual Phase (Day 1-5)

It begins on the first day of menstruation and lasts till the 5th day of the menstrual cycle. The
following events occur during this phase:
The uterus sheds its inner lining of soft tissue and blood vessels which exits the body from the
vagina in the form of menstrual fluid.
Blood loss of 10 ml to 80 ml is considered normal.
You may experience abdominal cramps. These cramps are caused by the contraction of the
uterine and the abdominal muscles to expel the menstrual fluid.
IN THE CALENDAR ABOVE, NOV. 26 IS DAY 1 OF MENSTRUAL CYCLE.COLOR DAY 1-5 WITH RED,
THESE ARE THE DAYS WHEN THE UTERUS SHEDS ITS INNER LINING OF SOFT TISSUE AND BLOOD VESSELS
WHICH IS SOMETIMES CALLED AS MENSTRUAL FLOW.)

Follicular phase (Day 14)

This phase also begins on the first day of menstruation, but it lasts till the 13th day of the
menstrual cycle. The following events occur during this phase:
The pituitary gland secretes a hormone that stimulates the egg cells in the ovaries to grow.
One of these egg cells begins to mature in a sac-like-structure called follicle. It takes 13 days
for the egg cell to reach maturity.
While the egg cell matures, its follicle secretes a hormone that stimulates the uterus to
develop a lining of blood vessels and soft tissue called endometrium.
IN THE CALENDAR ABOVE, START AT NOVEMBER 26 AS THE FIRST DAY, THEN CONTINUE UNTIL YOU
REACH THE 13TH DAY, COLOR THIS BLUE. THIS INDICATES THE LAST DAY OF FOLLICULAR PHASE.

Ovulation phase (Day 14)

On the 14th day of the cycle, the pituitary gland secretes a hormone that causes the ovary to
release the matured egg cell. The released egg cell is swept into the fallopian tube by the cilia of
the fimbriae. Fimbriae are finger like projections located at the end of the fallopian tube close to
the ovaries and cilia are slender hair like projections on each Fimbria.
IN THE CALENDAR ABOVE, AFTER COLORING THE 13TH DAY WITH BLUE, THIS TIME COLOR THE 14TH
DAY WITH COLOR GREEN, IT INDICATES THE DAY WHEN THE OVARY RELEASES MATURED EGG.

Luteal phase (Day 15-28)

This phase begins on the 15th day and lasts till the end of the cycle. The following events occur
during this phase:
The egg cell released during the ovulation phase stays in the fallopian tube for 24 hours.
If a sperm cell does not impregnate the egg cell within that time, the egg cell disintegrates.
The hormone that causes the uterus to retain its endometrium gets used up by the end of the
menstrual cycle. This causes the menstrual phase of the next cycle to begin.

Fertile Days
The knowledge about Menstrual Cycle is important for a woman to be prepare of her coming
period. Menstrual Cycle is also used as a natural birth control which we called the Calendar Rhythm
Method. However, this is NOT applicable for women with irregular menstrual cycles, or those which
last less than 26 or more than 32 days.
Fertility is the ability to become fertile or to produce an offspring. Remember that ovulation occurs
about 14 days before your period starts. If your average menstrual cycle is 28 days, you ovulate
around day 14, and your most fertile days are days 11-16. But why? Sperm cells can live inside the
body of a female for 3-4 days waiting for a mature egg cell. While egg cell dies after 3 days from
the ovulation day. That is 3-4 days before ovulation and 3 days after.
IN OUR CALENDAR ABOVE, THE 14TH DAY WHICH IS DECEMBER 9 IS THE OVULATION PERIOD, FERTILE
DAYS IS 3 TO 4 DAYS BEFORE OVULATION, COUNTING BACK FROM DECEMBER 8, IT WILL BE DECEMBER
6. 3 DAYS AFTER THE OVULTAION IS STILL A FERTILE PERIOD, SO COUNTING FORWARD STARTING WILTH
DCEMBER 9, WE WILL END UP WITH DECEMBER 11,.IT MEANS DECEMBER 6-11 ARE THE FERTILE DAYS,
MARK THESE DAYS IN THE CALENDAR WITH X TO SHOW THE FERTILE DAYS.
