AnTHELMINTICS
 Drug used to treat helminth or worm
infections or to destroy the parasite worms
or remove them from infected host.

Classification of Anthelmintic drugs

Cestodes tape worm infection(lives in intestine ribbon line body)

Trematodes Fluke worm (The adult (mature) flukes are found in the
bile ducts and liver of infected people and animals)
Antimony sodium tartarate

Nematodes round worm, thread worm, whip worm(whipworm is one


of the four most common intestinal parasites of dogs. )
a) Antifilarial : diethyl cabamazepine citrate

b) Intestinal nematode infection( like round worm or thread worm)

 Physical properties
Colourless and glassy with deliquescent crystals
having faint characteristic odour.
 Freely soluble in water and alcohol
 very slightly soluble in ether
Piperazine
Uses

 Used to treat Pinworm infection.


 Enterobiosis
 infestation with or disease caused by pinworms (genus
Enterobius, especially E. vermicularis) that occurs especially in
children.

 Round worm infestation ascariasis


 This can happen when hands or fingers that have
contaminated dirt on them are put in the mouth, or by eating
vegetables or fruits that have not been carefully peeled,
washed, or cooked.
Stability and Storage
 Stored in tightly closed container, light resistant
containers.

 Physical Properties

White to slightly Yellow amorphous powder.

Odourless, Bitter saline taste .

It is practically insoluble in water, chloroform and ether.

Freely soluble in formic acid.


Uses

 Anthelmintic effective against threadworm, roundworm, whipworm


and hookworm.

 Used in the t/t of capillariaris and also effective against tapeworm.


Capillariasis is a parasitic disease in humans caused by two
different species of capillarids: Capillaria hepatica and Capillaria
philippinensis. C. hepatica is transferred through the fecal matter of
infected animals and can lead to hepatitis.

 River blindness, is a disease caused by infection with the parasitic


worm Onchocerca volvulus. Symptoms include severe itching,
bumps under the skin, and blindness.

 Guinea worm infection GWD is spread by drinking water containing


Guinea worm larvae. Larvae are immature forms of the worm.
Stability and Storage
 Stable under normal conditions of tem., light and moisture.
Stored in tightly CLOSED containers.

 Used in intestinal amoebiasis.


 Used in amoebic dysentry.
 Used in combination with chloroquine and tetracycline in
amoebic dysentry and in t/t of hepatic amoebiasis.

It is very slightly soluble in water, soluble in dilute acid,


alcohol, dil. Ammonia solution.
Stabilty and storage
 It is affected by light, stored in air tight closed , protected
from light.
 Uses
Used in t/t malaria and caused by p. falciparum.
 Relieve night leg cramp., To treat cerebral malaria.
 Relieve muscle cramp in myotonia congentina. Prolonged
muscle contraction and slow relaxation.
 As a sclerosing agent in combination with urethane.
 Mild antipyretic and analgesic.

 Used in the t/t of rheumatid arthritis. In the t/t of giardiasis.
