Theory (Flexible Coupling – Bushed Pin Type)
A flexible coupling employs a flexible element like a rubber
bush between the driving and the driven flanges. This flexible
rubber bush not only accommodates the misalignment but also
absorbs shocks and vibrations. The construction of the flexible
coupling is shown in figure below.
Analytical Solution 2
t = 12.5 mm
t1 = 6.25 mm
lb = Db = 24.2788 mm ≈24.28 mm
Dimensions of Keys
l = lh = 37.5 mm
b = 8 mm, h = 7 mm ……… [Referred PSG DATABOOK 5.24]
Sheer stress in key
Τ(induced) = (2 x Mt) / (d x b x l) = 35.368 Mpa
Τ(permissible) = 50 Mpa
35.368 <50 hence is safe in sheer.
Crushing Stress in key
Crushing stress σ(induced) = (8 x Mt) / (d x h x l) = 80.84 Mpa
Crushing stress σ(permissible) = 110 Mpa
80.84<110 hence safe in crushing.

Conclusion
1. We learnt the significance of PSG Databook for designing of
the coupling.
2. Need of coupling arises when the power is to be
transmitted from a driver shaft to driven shaft, which may
or may not be completely aligned.
3. All the dimensions from the empirical formula were found
to be fit for use and no modifications in them were
required.
