Coupling
Introduction
A coupling can be defined as a mechanical device that permanently
joints two rotating shafts to each other.
 The most common application of coupling is joining of shafts of two
separately built or purchased units so that a new machine can be
formed.
A coupling is differ than a clutch. Coupling is a permanent connection
while the clutch can connect or disconnect two shafts at the will of
the operation.
 The shafts to be connected by the coupling may have colinear axes,
 intersecting axes or parallel axis with a small distance in between.
Functions Of Couplings
 A coupling can be defined as a mechanical device that permanently joins
two rotating shafts to eath other.
 Shaft couplings are used in machinary for several purposes such as:
 1) To provide the connection of shafts of two separately built or purchased
units such as engine and generator.
 2) To provide for misalignment of the shafts or to introduce mechanical
flexibility. Requirements Of Good Coupling
A good shaft coupling have the following requirements:
1) It should be easy to connect or disconnect.
2) It should transmit the full power from one shaft to the other shaft without
losses.
3) It should hold the shaft in perfect alignment.
4) It should reduce the transmission of shock loads from one shaft to
anothershaft.
5) It should have no projecting parts.
Factors consider in selection of
coupling
1) Torque requirement
2) Speed involved
3) Shaft misalignment
4) Operating condition
5) Direction of rotation
6) Life of coupling
Types Of Couplings
1]
 Rigid Coupling
It
 is used to connect two shafts which are perfectly aligned.
It is used only where the motion is free from shocks and vibrations.

Rigid couplings can be classified as:

(a) Sleeve or muff couplings (b) Split muff couplings © Flange couplings

 Flexible Coupling
It
 is used to connect two shafts having both lateral and angular misalignment.
The flexible coupling is capable of tolerating a small amount of misalignment between the shafts due
to provision of flexible elements like rubber bush or disk etc.
Flexible couplings can be classified as:
. (a) Bushed pin type couplings (b) Universal couplings © Oldhams couplings
Sleeve Or Muff Coupling
Introduction
 It is the simplest type of rigid coupling, made of cast iron.
 It consists of a sleeve or a hollow cylinder whose inner diameter
is same as that of the shaft.
 Itis fitted over the ends of input and output shaft by means of
Gib-headed sunk key.
 The power (torque) is transmitted from the input shaft to the
sleeve through key. It is then transmitted from the sleeve to the
output shaft through key.
Advantages of Muff Coupling
1) It is the simplest form of rigid coupling with only two parts
sleeve and key.
2) It is simple to design and manufacture.
3) It has compact construction.
4) It is cheaper than other couplings.
Disadvantages of Muff Coupling

1) It is difficult to assemble or dismantle.
2) It requires accurate alignment of shafts.
3) It can not tolerate misalignment between axes of two shafts.
4) It can not absorb shocks and vibrations.
Design Procedure For Muff Coupling
 For the sleeve coupling, the standard proportions used in practice are as follows:
D = 2d + 13
L = 3.5d
where, d = Diameter of shaft (mm)
D = Outside diameter of sleeve (mm)
L = Length of sleeve (mm)
 The basic procedure for finding out the dimensions of the muff coupling consists
of the following steps:
1) Calculate the diameter of each shaft:
Torque transmitted by the shaft,
P= 2πNT : T= 60P

Considering the shaft under twisting,
T = π/16 (d)³×£
Where, £ = Allowable shear stress for shaft material
Therefore, from above equation, calculate the diameter of each shaft.
2) Calculate the dimensions of sleeve by the following empirical equation:
(a) Outside diameter of sleeve, D = (2d + 13) in mm

(b) Length of sleeve, L = (3.5 d) in mm
Now, check the torsional shear stress induced in the sleeve
T = π × £×D³×(1-K⁴) Where, K= d/D

3) Calculate the dimensions of sunk key :
The length of the coupling key is atleast equal to the length of sleeve.
The coupling key is usually made into two parts so that the length of
the key in each shaft.
l =L= 3.5d

Width of the key, W= d/4

Thickness of the key, t= d/6
Check the key for induced shearing and crushing stresses.

Torque transmitted,
T= l×w/2×£×d/2
….. Considering shearing of the key
T= l×d/2 ×6c× d/2

…. Considering crushing of the key
