Choosing the right career can be a challenging task.

To make the decision easier, one must

consider varied factors like interests, strengths, and values. When I consider my interests,
strengths, and values, physical therapy comes into mind as a potential career option. I have the
interests, strengths, and values to be successful in the physical therapy industry. Physical
therapy is a form of medical profession that promotes, maintains, and restores health through
various methods. Physical therapy typically uses movement to improve health by prescribing
exercises, hands-on-care, and education. Physical therapists practice in a wide range of settings,
including hospitals, outpatient clinics, people’s homes, schools, sports and fitness facilities,
workplaces, and nursing homes, operating with diverse types of people.

Physical therapy requires many different skills and abilities. To be a successful physical
therapist, there are necessary skills and abilities to treat patients effectively. Physical therapists
must be able to think logically, and anatomically. They must understand what is happening to a
patient's body and identify the source of the problem and a solution. Physical therapists must
also be able to communicate with their patients effectively and provide them with education to
continue being healthy.

In order to go into the physical therapy field, one must go through all the necessary training and
schooling to be certified. Physical therapists must earn a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree
from a Commision of Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education-accredited physical therapist
education program and pass a state licensure exam. The length of professional DPT programs is
typically three years. Primary content areas in the curriculum may include biology/anatomy,
cellular histology, physiology, exercise physiology, biomechanics, kinesiology, neuroscience,
pharmacology, pathology, behavioral sciences, communication, ethics/values, management
sciences, finance, sociology, clinical reasoning, evidence-based practice, cardiovascular and
pulmonary, endocrine, and metabolic, and musculoskeletal. The median salary for a physical
therapist is $85,000 but salaries vary based on position, years of experience, degree of
education, geographic location, and practice setting. A physical therapist must go through
extensive education and training to become a certified physical therapist.

Physical therapy is a profession that specializes in health and rehabilitation. There are many
different careers that share similar components to physical therapy. Other careers related to
this career are athletic trainer, rehabilitation counselor, and exercise physiologist. These careers
all help patients or athletes from injuries and use movement to help. All of these occupations
look to help patients and athletes be stronger, healthier, and injury free.

When choosing a career, it is most important to find a profession you love and are confident in.
Based on my strengths, interests, and values, I would be successful in being a physical therapist.
First, I enjoy exercise and sports where injuries are quite common. I’ve had many trips to
physical therapy and understand the effectiveness of rehabilitation. I am disciplined and
focused to work on patients and can understand the many concepts of physical therapy.
Physical therapy is a career I hope to enter in the future.
