Narrator: It’s a usual day for Leila, hours of scrolling through social media

and she gets a notification from a stranger she does not know of. Is this a
beginning of a friendship or will it end up to something else?

*Scrolls on Facebook and gets a friend request notification, accepts the

friend request and gets a message*

James: Hi there, thanks for accepting my request, I hope we’ll be good

friends.
Leila: Hey, no problem, it’s just I was wondering why you added me, we
don’t have any mutual friends.
James: Oh, I just saw you and thought you looked nice, I’m hoping it’s
alright with you.

Narrator: Months of talking, James and Leila got close and became “good”
internet friends even though they have not met yet. Leila feels comfortable
sharing to James the things that’s going on with her life.

Leila: I’m really excited to start my college life and explore new things. I
should call James to tell him about this.

*Calls James on Messenger*

James: Hey
Leila: Hi James, how are you?
James: I’m good. What’s up, why’d you call?
Leila: I just want to open up with something I’m really thrilled about.
James: *Sighs in boredom* Sure, I’m free so…
Leila: Do you remember that time when I told you about how my parents
saved up for my college?
James: Yeah, I actually do.
Leila: So, classes are near and I’m planning to enroll as soon as possible
so I get a discount and not rush with the crowd.
James: Are you going to do it online?
Leila: I suppose so since we’re in the middle of a pandemic.
James: Cool. I’ll send you a link of the schools that I know which fit in the
course that you want to get.
Leila: Nice talking to you. Have a great day!
James: Yeah, bye. *Hangs up the phone*

Narrator: After their conversation, Leila have decided to call her friend,
Arrietty to tell her how things are going.

*Dials Arrietty’s phone number*

Leila: Hey there, Arrietty!

Arrietty: Hi Leila. How are you doing?
Leila: I’m all good. Do you know that it’s 3 months before classes?
Arrietty: Of course, I do! I’m really excited about how it’s going to be.
Leila: Me, too. I also told James about it, I can’t wait to go to college!
Arrietty: You know what, Leila? You really shouldn’t be telling personal
stuffs with this James; you haven’t met him yet and you don’t really know
what he’s like.
Leila: Well, we’ve talked for seven months now and I think I can trust him.
Arrietty: Just don’t come to me when this ‘internet friend’ ever does you
harm.
Leila: Oh, bugger it off, Arrietty, nothing bad will happen.
Arrietty: Sure *rolls eyes*, I gotta go now. See you!

Narrator: A couple of hours have passed and Leila receives a strange link
from James. All because she fully trusts him, she is not hesitant on finding
out what this link will bring to her. As she opens it up, it comes off as
sketchy and something that she can’t comprehend. Her laptop started
lagging and the battery getting weaker than it used to. She tries to ask
James what it’s all about but he’s ignoring her messages. School is
approaching so the day after, she pays her tuition fee for the year. Days
after getting no response, she finally calls Arrietty to ask her on this matter.

*Dials Arrietty’s phone number*

Arrietty: Hey, Leila!

Leila: *Answers in a worried/saddened tone* Hi Arrietty
Arrietty: What’s the matter? Why do you sound like that?
Leila: I don’t know, I guess you’re right about James. The last time we
talked, he sent me a link and I opened it up, by then my laptop started
getting weird and all that. What do you think is happening?
Arrietty: Oh my, that must be spyware! You should bring it to a computer
technician, I hope nothing really serious will happen.
Leila: *Replies in so much worry* Really? I should get this fixed. It’s all my
fault, I didn’t listen to you.
Narrator: A few minutes have gone and a spending notification reaches
Leila saying she’s spent 135,000 pesos. She sits there frozen and not
knowing what to do, Leila weeps in tears for this money is supposed to be
invested in something important, the moment she checked on Facebook,
James had already blocked her and the money her parents have worked
for is now gone.
