Frailty Assessment Mobile Health Application for Older Adults in La Trinidad, Benguet.
The rapid increase in the aging population is tantamount to an increase of older adults at risk of
Frailty syndrome. Frailty is a global health burden since it has a great impact on the health of the
older adult. Frailty is a condition among the aging population that develops as a result of age-
related weakness in multiple physiological systems, causing an older adult more vulnerable to
sudden changes in health status and increased risk for unintended or unwanted events. Previous
studies have shown that frailty and co-existing diseases are associated with a lower quality of life
in older adults. However, this condition is reversible with early detection and interventions.
Significantly, mHealth has been recorded to be of great help in health care information and
management of chronic diseases wherein frailty assessment mHeatlh app can be used in the
community health setting as a tool to identify risks and suggest interventions. This study aimed to
explore the end-user environment and problems relating to the frailty assessment of the older
adult, discover the design specifications mHealth app, and determine the usability of the
developed frailty mHealth app.The study employed the Modified Information Systems Research
(MISR) framework, combining two user-centered design methods, viz; Information Systems
Research and Design Thinking. Twenty-two research participants representing various roles:
public health nurses and midwives, barangay health workers, and caregivers from barangay
Pico, Balli and Betag consented to the study. The data collection instruments are the Post-Study
System Usability Questionnaire (PSSUQ) and the guides for observations, interviews or focus
group discussion, think-aloud protocol, brainstorming, prototyping, and personas. The problems
relating to frailty assessment are Frailty assessment tools are not existing, Risk assessment
among older adults is not a mandatory service, Access to health services are limited and
disrupted, Indifference with frailty as a public health problem in the older adult, and Lack of
geriatric-specific programs in community health facilities (FRAIL). The design specifications are
Navigations and functions, Accessibility, Profile/demographics, Interventions, Good color
combinations, Simple screen contents, and Appropriate language (NAPIGSA). Despite the
different perspectives from the participants, the study were able to developed a mHealth app
applicable to both health workers and family caregivers. Thus, the usability testing confirmed
the mHealth app as satisfying and performing in terms of system usefulness, information quality,
and interface quality. Utilizing the Modified Information Systems Research framework (MISR) ,
the study developed a frailty assessment mHeath app termed Mabikas, a local dialect related to
strength and health in the elderly.
