Introduction of the Topic:

Problem solving is a process of finding solutions to difficult or complex

issues. There are many possible strategies and techniques you can use to
solve math problems. These steps can be summarized as follows:

1. Understand the problem

● Read the problem carefully and clearly identify the question that is to
be answered.

2. Plan
● Choose a strategy to solve the problem.

3. Solve the problem

● Carry out the problem-solving strategy

4. Check the solution

● This process allows the learners to reflect and to look back on his
answer by reviewing the procedure.

Example #1

James planted tomato seeds in a circular plot in their

backyard at Aeta’s village in Zambales. He wants to build a fence
around the plot for the safety of the newly planted seeds. How many
fencing materials does James need if the diameter of the circular plot
is 5 meters?

Understand
a. What is asked in the problem?
● How much fencing materials does James need for his plot?

MATH 5 QUARTER 3 WEEK 9 3

b. What are the given facts?
● The diameter of the circular plot is 5 meters.

Plan
Since the plot is circular with the diameter of 5 meters in measurement
therefore, we can get the length of fencing materials needed by getting
the circumference of the plot using the formula C = πd where;

C = Circumference
d = Diameter
π = 3.14

Solve

C=πxd Substitute the value of π and d

C = 3.14 x 5 meters
C = 15.7 meters

Check
C = π x d

15.7 meters = 3.14 x 5 meters

15.7 meters = 15.7 meters

Answer: James needs 15.7 meters of fencing materials for his

plot.

Example #2

Mark is a bicycle rider at Camarin, Caloocan City. The radius

of his bicycle wheel is 11 inches. How far will he move in one turn of
his wheel?

Understand
a. What is asked in the problem?
● How far will he move in one turn of his wheel?

b. What are the given facts?

● The radius of the bicycle wheel is 11 inches.

Plan

MATH 5 QUARTER 3 WEEK 9 4

Since the given measurement of the radius of the wheel is 11 inches
therefore, we will solve for circumference of the wheel using the formula
C = 2πr where;

C = Circumference
r = Radius
π = 3.14

Solve
C =2xπxr Substitute the value of π and r
C = 2 x 3.14 x 11 inches
C = 6.28 x 11 inches
C = 69.08 inches

Check
C =2 x π x r

69.08 inches = 2 x 3.14 x 11 inches

69.08 inches = 6.28 x 11 inches

69.08 inches = 69.08 inches

Answer: Mark moves 69.08 inches one complete

turn.

Example #3
Greynielle runs the edge of the entire Quezon City Memorial Circle.
If he runs 1802.36 m. How long is the distance across the center of the
circle?

Understand
a. What is asked?
● How long is the distance across the center of the circle?

b. What are given facts?

● The distance of the edge of the circle is 1802.36 m.
Plan

MATH 5 QUARTER 3 WEEK 9 5

Since the distance around the circle is 1802.36 m which is the
circumference therefore, we will solve for the diameter using the formula
𝐶
d = where;
𝜋
d = Diameter
C = Circumference
π = 3.14

Solve

𝐶
d= Substitute the value of C and π
𝜋
1802.36 𝑚
d=
3.14
d = 574 m

Check:
C = π x d

1802.36 m = 3.14 x 574 m

1802.36 m = 1802.36 m

Answer: The distance across the center of the circle is 574 meters
