 REPORT ON EXPORT OF TIMBER AND WOOD PRODUCTS, SEPTEMBER 2019

SUMMARY
The export of Ghana’s timber and wood products in the month of September, 2019 amounted to €10,077,328.24
in value from the exported volume of 20,686.425m3 which represent decreases of 16.11% in value and 10.67% in
volume respectively as compared to an amount of €12,012,195.10 gained from the exported volume of
23,156.567m3 documented in September, 2018. Eighty-Two (82) Exporters (with the topmost five [5] Samartex
Timber and Plywood Company Limited, Fortune Exim Ghana Limited, Logs and Lumber Limited, Renas Prestige
Company Limited and John Bitar and Company Limited with respect to exported volumes) were involved in the
export of Eleven (11) different wood products (with the best five [5] Lumber (Air Dried), Lumber (Kiln Dried),
Billet, Plywood (Overland) and Rotary Veneer with respect to manufactured volumes) in Forty-One (41) Species
(with the first [5] being Teak, Wawa, Ceiba, Mahogany and Denya with regards to volumes felled) to Forty-One (41)
different countries (with the top [5] favourite destination India, China, Germany, United States of America and Niger
in terms of shipping volumes) sold to One Hundred and Sixteen (116) diverse Buyers (with the top five [5] being
Fortune Exim, Shree Sagar General Trading, Superior Timber and Deckings Limited, New Dandeli Ventures and Atul
Timber Company with regards to volumes purchased).

Cumulatively, Ghana secured €116,083,925.32 from the export of 229,239.361m3 in January-September 2019.
Comparatively, in the previous year for the same period under review €144,029,885.14 was obtained from the
export of 251,469.091m3 representing decreases of 19.40% in value and 8.84% in volume respectively.

Consequently, the overall Average Unit Price increased from €573/m3 in January-September 2018 to €506/m3 in
January-September 2019, representing a deficit of 11.59%.

Primary Products (Billets) accrued €6,850,074.49 (5.90%) from 18,770.266m3 (8.19%) of the total export of
wood products from January-September 2019. The figures indicate decreases of 19.32% in volume and 23.80% in
value respectively compared to the timber export figures from January-September 2018 of 23,264.309m3
(9.25%) valued at €8,990,047.17 (6.24%). [See Appendix A].

Secondary Wood Products comprising of Lumber, Plywood, Veneer, Kindling, Boules formed the bulk of the
country’s wood export which generated €104,915,638.04 (90.38%) from a volume of 204,182.830m3 (89.07%)
from January-September 2019. The figures indicate decreases of 19.38% in value and 7.97% in volume compared
to the contribution of €130,143,657.30 (90.36%) and 221,866.509m3 (88.23%), respectively from January-
September 2018. [See Appendix B].

Tertiary Wood Products (Processed L/Mouldings, Dowels and Doors) contributed €4,318,212.79 (3.72%) from
a volume of 6,286.265m3 (2.74%) to the total wood products export from January-September 2019. Moreover,
the figures indicate decreases of 0.82% in volume and 11.80% in value compared to the contribution of 6,338.272
m3 (2.52%) and €4,896,180.66 (3.40%) from January-September 2018. [See Appendix C].

On the direction of Trade, Asian/Far East countries (favourite destinations) imported 159,328.953m3 (69.50%)
valued at €77.57million (66.82%) during the period of September 2019; as the major destinations (in terms of
value) for Ghana’s wood products were India, China, Vietnam and Qatar. Exports of timber products to these regions
were Lumber (Air Dried), Billet, Lumber (Kiln Dried), Sliced Veneer, Rotary Veneer in Teak, Wawa, Denya, Senya,
Papao/ Apa, Gmelina, Yaya, Potrodum, Rubberwood, Eucalyptus.

European imports accounted for €19.27million (16.60%) from a volume of 33,225.335m3 (14.49%) to be the
second major destination (in terms of value) for Ghana’s wood products export during the month of September
2019. Exports to Europe were Lumber (Kiln Dried), Processed L/ Mouldings, Sliced Veneer, Boules (Air Dried),
Plywood, Rotary Veneer, Lumber (Air Dried) and Kindling in Wawa, Ceiba, Niangon, Asanfina, Odum, Mahogany,
Koto / Kyere, Kusia, Otie, Sapele.

Wood product exports to Africa (third topmost destination) included Plywood (Overland), Rotary Veneer, Lumber
(Air Dried), Lumber (Kiln Dried) and Processed L/ Mouldings yielded €9.55million (8.23%) from an exported
volume of 25,157.170m3 (10.97%). Major destinations included Egypt, South Africa and Morocco; with the
ECOWAS sub-region market having the largest share of 20,611.545m3 (81.93%) valued at €7.13million (74.61%)
of the total African wood products exported from Ghana during the period of September 2019. Wood products
consisted mainly Plywood (Overland) and Lumber (Air Dried). Togo (Plywood in Ceiba), Niger (Plywood in Ceiba),
Burkina Faso (Plywood in Ceiba and Mixed Redwood), and Cape Verde (Lumber (Air Dried) in Candollei, Guarea and
Danta) were the main ECOWAS markets during the period under review.

American imports accounted for €7.38million (6.36%) from the volume of 7,943.963m3 (3.47%) making it
the fourth topmost destination (in terms of value) for Ghana’s wood products export in September 2019. Exports to
America were mainly Lumber (Kiln Dried), Rotary Veneer and Sliced Veneer in Mahogany, Sapele, Essa, Cedrela.
Edinam and Black Ofram.
