Chinese Culture – LA332

Term Paper
-R Prathamesh (12041170)

The topic that our group chose for the presentation was ‘Chinese New Year’. The
subtopic I presented was about ‘Why They Celebrate’. Throughout the research that I did to
collect information about why it is celebrated, I discovered new and amazing things about
Chinese culture. I found out interesting things about the Chinese Zodiac and the origin story
behind the order allocation of the animals. The story about the race and how the cat is angry
at the mouse for not waking it up was fun to discover. Like the Chinese calendar, a lot of
Indian practices are also based on the moon and its positions over a time period. The idea of
giving farmers and workers a rest to get refreshed was also something that is aligned with
Indian festivals. And of course, the mythical story of Nian was a nice way to explain the
practice and was very interesting to read, much like the Indian mythological stories. Also,
while working with my teammates, I got to know about the clothing traditions and how other
cultures influenced Chinese clothing and vice versa. I was also fascinated by the appetizing
food eaten and the eye-catching decorations made on this day. Finally, the traditions that are
followed to celebrate the new year was also very intriguing to learn.

Overall, I liked this course a lot, very interesting and beautifully explained. Learning about a
whole new culture was a fascinating experience. The similarities between Indian and Chinese
cultures were striking and obvious, which was pleasing to know. Also, being a fun course on
its own, it helped take my mind away from the other tedious courses which were extremely
energy-draining.

However, a disadvantage of this course would be the presentation and term paper being
scheduled after the course ended. Being a one-credit course, there was already less time, and
with COVID-19 cramping the schedule further, admittedly it would have been tough for us to
do the presentations and term paper before the course ended, however, I think it would have
helped if we were informed in more detail at the beginning itself about the presentation and
term paper. (even if the dates were the same) It could have helped us as we could have started
our research earlier, which might have also helped us in understanding the lecture classes
better too. (because of us researching the topics)

Apart from this small suggestion, I absolutely enjoyed this course, and now that I’m hooked
to Chinese culture, I look forward to more courses that I can register for in the upcoming
semesters that are related to Chinese culture.
