0718588388 We note that this crisis arose through systematic neglect by the government and its failure
to address the basic needs of the people during these very trying times. People have lost
Vice Presidents: their livelihoods, and access to essential commodities, such as fuel, food, and fertilizer,
Prof. Anura Uthumange
University of Sri Jayewardenepura and are left to confront the rising cost of living and food shortages in these uncertain times,
with little in the form of direction or support from the government. Education has also

pandemic.
Dr WTMAPK Wanninayake
University of Kelaniya
The fallout from this crisis has been particularly felt by those who are already vulnerable
Dr. T. Sathaananthan and marginalized. The gradual weakening of democratic institutions and norms, through
Eastern University of Sri Lanka
fearmongering and scapegoating, with their replacement by authoritarian structures,
Mr. Nadeesh De Silva politicized bodies, and a silenced press, compels the public to take to the streets. Today,
Open University of Sri Lanka the government has lost all legitimacy and trust and can only remain in power by coercive

Prof. J. Hewage FUTA stands in solidarity with those who call for change; the youth of this country,
University of Ruhuna
including our students, who lead the protests in their thousands. We join with them, the
Dr. Naleen Ganegoda working people who protest, including teachers, farmers, the fishing community, and

others who struggle with their daily lives and/or are unable to protest. FUTA seeks to work
Dr. Mahesh Hapugoda with other trade unions and like-minded groups to respond to the economic and political

crises that Sri Lanka and its people are faced with today. We are keen to participate in
conversations, collaborations, and protests that can help us collectively overcome the
current crisis. We reiterate our commitment to building a society that upholds social
justice, pluralism, democracy, equality, and freedom.
