Hydrometer Experiment 1
Hydrometer Experiment 1
A hydrometer is usually made of glass and consists of a cylindrical stem and a bulb
weighted with mercury or lead shot to make it float upright. The liquid to be tested
is poured into a tall container, often a graduated cylinder, and the hydrometer is
gently lowered into the liquid until it floats freely. The point at which the surface
of the liquid touches the stem of the hydrometer is noted. Hydrometers usually
contain a scale inside the stem, so that the specific gravity can be read directly. A
variety of scales exist, and are used depending on the context.
Procedure
Tow type of hydrometer were used in the lab one of them is starting with 0.7 and
another is 0.9 with Thermometer to measure the temperature of the room and its 18o
the hydrometer was put into the graduated cylinder to measure the SP.GR of the
liquids then by using the SP.GR calculate the API and density of the liquids
Results:
The result of the SP.GR that students measure it with the help of supervisors
The API=(141.5/SP.GR)-131.5
Discussion
Three types of liquid were used in the lab (water, Pure kerosine, Crude kerosine) In
the first hydrometer put into the water to measure the SP.GR the hydrometer
shows 0.793SP.GR and then put in the second one that its Pure kerosine and shows
0.784 SP.GR the last one its Crude kerosine and the hydrometer shows 0.998(by
using the second type of hydrometer)
Conclusion
In the graduated cylinder that contain liquids there are a hydrometer to measure the
SP.GR by using lab coat and by specifying the points on the graduated cylinder in detail
to get a detailed statistic.
