The document discusses different types of renewable energy sources including solar, wind, hydroelectric, and biomass energy. It explains that renewable energies can continue providing energy indefinitely, unlike non-renewable sources which are limited. The use of renewable energy is increasing as costs decline and technologies advance. While some renewable sources like biomass and large hydroelectric dams can have environmental impacts, renewable energy overall reduces emissions and reliance on fossil fuels. The document encourages individuals to advocate for and utilize renewable energy sources where possible.

RENEWABLE VS NON RENEWABLE ENERGY

Renewable energies are renewable, hence the name, while non-renewable energies are not which allows renewable energy to
continue providing energy long after non-renewable sources have ceased to exist as a viable source of energy. Non-renewable
energy exists on Earth in limited quantities and as they are consumed the stores are depleted until eventually they will disappear
from existence.

WHAT ARE RENEWABLE

ENERGIES?
Renewable energies are the present and
future of the world’s electricity production. The
term “renewable” expresses the essence of this
type of energy, which is available in
spontaneously generated, inexhaustible
quantities that are continually renewed in
nature without any human intervention. Sun,
wind and water, the heat of the earth:
producing renewable energy means using
those widespread and abundant elements of
nature to generate electricity. Compared to
electricity produced from conventional sources,
renewable energy drastically reduces levels of
carbon dioxide emissions

THE CLEAN FACTS

Renewable power is booming, as innovation
brings down costs and starts to deliver on the
promise of a clean energy future. American
solar and wind generation are breaking records
and being integrated into the national
electricity grid without compromising reliability.

This means that renewables are increasingly

displacing “dirty” fossil fuels in the power
sector, o ering the bene t of lower emissions
of carbon and other types of pollution. But not
all sources of energy marketed as “renewable”
are bene cial to the environment. Biomass and
large hydroelectric dams create di cult
tradeo s when considering the impact on
wildlife, climate change, and other issues. Here’s
what you should know about the di erent types
of renewable energy sources—and how you can
use these emerging technologies at your own
home.

TYPES OF RENEWABLE
ENERGY SOURCES:
SOLAR ENERGY
Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the
Sun that is harnessed using a range of ever-
evolving technologies such as solar heating,
photovoltaics, solar thermal energy, solar
architecture, molten salt power plants and
arti cial photosynthesis.

It is an essential source of renewable energy,

and its technologies are broadly characterized
as either passive solar or active solar
depending on how they capture and distribute
solar energy or convert it into solar power.

WIND ENERGY
Wind power is one of the fastest-growing
renewable energy technologies. Usage is on
the rise worldwide, in part because costs are
falling. Wind is used to produce electricity
using the kinetic energy created by air in
motion. This is transformed into electrical
energy using wind turbines or wind energy
conversion systems. Wind rst hits a
turbine’s blades, causing them to rotate and
turn the turbine connected to them. That
changes the kinetic energy to rotational
energy, by moving a shaft which is
connected to a generator, and thereby
producing electrical energy through
electromagnetism.

OTHER ALTERNATIVE ENERGY
SOURCES:HYDROELECTRIC
POWER
Hydroelectric energy, also called hydroelectric
power or hydroelectricity, is a form of energy that
harnesses the power of water in motion—such as
water owing over a waterfall—to generate
electricity. People have used this force for
millennia. Most hydroelectric power plants have a
reservoir of water, a gate or valve to control how
much water ows out of the reservoir, and an outlet
or place where the water ends up after owing
downward. Water gains potential energy just before
it spills over the top of a dam or ows down a hill.
The potential energy is converted into kinetic energy
as water ows downhill. The water can be used to
turn the blades of a turbine to generate electricity,
which is distributed to the power plant’s customers.

BIOMASS ENERGY
Biomass is organic material that comes from
plants and animals, and includes crops, waste
wood, and trees. When biomass is burned, the
chemical energy is released as heat and can
generate electricity with a steam turbine.

Biomass is often mistakenly described as a

clean, renewable fuel and a greener alternative
to coal and other fossil fuels for producing
electricity. However, recent science shows that
many forms of biomass—especially from
forests—produce higher carbon emissions
than fossil fuels. There are also negative
consequences for biodiversity. Still, some
forms of biomass energy could serve as a low-
carbon option under the right circumstances.
RENEWABLE
ENERGY AND YOU
Advocating for renewables, or using
them in your home, can accelerate
the transition toward a clean energy
future. Even if you’re not yet able to
install solar panels, you may be able
to opt for electricity from a clean
energy source. (Contact your power
company to ask if it o ers that
choice.) If renewable energy isn’t
available through your utility, you can
purchase renewable energy
certi cates to o set your use.

RENEWABLE ENERGY IN
YOUR HOME
Clean renewable electrical energy generation
systems are becoming increasingly accessible to
the average homeowner either installed at home
and connected to the grid or purchased as
GreenPower.Renewable energy can also be used
for home heating and cooling, hot water and
even cooking.Equipment costs for renewable
energy systems are generally declining

These energy systems usually operate with low

running costs but can be expensive to install,
although equipment costs are generally
declining. Maintenance can also be a cost issue
for systems reliant on batteries.
