1. What is bedmaking?
Bedmaking is one of the most important nursing techniques to prepare various
types of for patients or clients to ensure comfort and useful position for a
particular condition. Knowing how to make various types of beds and how to
modify them for special situations is of paramount importance for the nurse. A
clean, wrinkle free bed that remains intact when a patient moves does a great deal
for the patient’s physical and psychological comfort.

2. What is the rationale for doing it?


 To provide rest and sleep.
 To provide physical and psychological comfort and security to the patient.
 To give the unit a neat appearance.
 To establish an effective nurse patient’s relationship.
 To provide active and passive exercise to the patient.
 To promote freshness and cleanliness.
 To develop skill in the posture/body alignment of the nurse in bed-making.
 To observe, identify, and prevent patient complications.
 To accommodate the patient’s needs.
 To reduce patient’s exertion by bed-making.
 To eliminate irritants to the skin from the patient’s body.
 To dispose of soiled and dirty linen properly.
 Another purpose of bed-making is to save time, effort, and material properly.

3. What are the principles involved in bed making?


Some basic principles of bed-making:
1. It is important to learn how to make a bed in such a way where the least amount
of energy and time is required.
2. During bed-making, use good body movement and make each step purposeful.
3. Keep everything ready on the bedside before starting bed-making.
4. Change bed linen frequently to assure cleanliness.
5. To ensure the patient’s needs by providing a safe and comfortable bed.
6. It should have a finished appearance.
7. To make the bed tight and free from wrinkles, place all linen straight lines on the
bed.
8. Prevent complications of prolonged bedridden patient such as pressure sores.
9. Soiled linen or linen whether clean or dirty should not be thrown on the floor, but
it should be kept in a dirty linen box.
10. After cleaning the bed, dump soap water, and disinfectant properly.
11. Try to prevent cross-infection of microorganisms during bed-making.
12. Ensure all bed-making in a nursing unit alike for uniformity of appearance.

ANALYZE AND USE CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS IN ANSWERING QUESTIONS:


1. Explain what assessment you should make before proceeding with bedmaking.
We will be performing the focused assessment.
 Wash hands before proceeding to bed making procedures.
 Check the activity order, and assess the client’s ability to get out of bed.
Rationale: This determines whether an unoccupied or occupied bed should be made.
 Assess the client’s self-toileting ability; note the presence of any wounds, drainage tubes.
Rationale: This determines if placement of waterproof pads should be on the bed.

2. Formulate the kinds of questions you will ask the client and what information you will
give.
 First, introduce yourself to the patient.
 Tell the patient that you are going to perform bed making.
 Introduce the equipment’s (ex: linen, blanket etc.) included in bed making.
 Then ask if she can move out of the bed.
 If not then perform the bedmaking while the patient is in the bed.
 Follow the bed making procedures.

3. What type of bed should we make?


Occupied bed, used when the client is not allowed or could not move out of the bed.

4. What are the rationale?


 To change linen with the least possible disturbance to the patient.
 To draw or fix the sheets under the patients very firmly so that it would not
wrinkle.
 To remove crumbs from the bed.
 To make patient feel comfortable.
