directions being 2m c/c. Live load = 1.5 kN/m2. Adopt M20 Concrete
and Fe 415 steel.
b) What type of RCC slab will you suggest when you want to construct CO3 (05)
very big auditorium hall to have clear view without any obstructions?

UNIT- IV
7. a) Determine the ultimate bending moment of rectangular RCC slab at its CO4 (10)
collapse state of size 4.5 m X 6.5 m which is simply supported along
the edges and has to carry service load of 4kN/m2. µ = 0.75. Design
and detail the slab using M20 concrete and Fe 415 Steel.
b) Derive an expression for Yield line orthotopically reinforced simply CO4 (10)
supported Hexagonal slab subjected to uniformly distributed load over
entire surface.

8. a) Derive an expression for Yield line orthotopically reinforced simply CO4 (10)
supported Rectangular slab subjected to uniformly distributed load over
entire surface.
b) Design a circular slab of diameter 5m which is simply supported at the CO4 (10)
edges. Live load = 4kN/m2. Assume M20 grade concrete and Fe 415
steel. Assume load factor according to IS: 456- 2000.

UNIT- V
9. a) Enlist the Types of Joints in Concrete Constructions with neat sketch. CO5 (10)
b) Why ductility and stiffness is very important parameter for the CO5 (10)
earthquake resistant design of RC structure. How do you increase the
ductility in the building and which are the factors that influence the
ductility?

10. a) As structural designer how you do ductile detailing for flexure member CO5 (10)
as per IS-13920:2003 codal provision.
b) Why expansion joints are necessary in the structure? Explain with neat CO5 (10)
sketch where do you provide them in the building?

SEMESTER END EXAMINATIONS – JANUARY 2017

Course & Branch : M.Tech: Structural Engineering Semester : I
Subject : Advanced Design of Concrete Structures Max. Marks : 100
Subject Code : MSTRE151 Duration : 3 Hrs

Instructions to the Candidates:

• Answer one full question from each unit.
• Suitably assume any missing data.
• Use of IS 456-2000 and SP16 permitted.
• Sketch design details.

UNIT – I

1. Analyze a two span continuous beam of 6 m each span, carrying an imposed (20)
load of 32 kN/m. Design the beam as a doubly reinforced section using M20
concrete and Fe415 steel.

2. A semi circular beam with an effective radius of 6 m, supported by three (20)

columns is required. Design the beam if it is required to support an imposed
load of 30 kN/m.

UNIT – II

3. A RCC grid slab is to be provided for an auditorium 14m X 22 m , The ribs are (20)
placed at 2m c/c. LL on the slab is 4kN/m2. Design the grid slab and beams by
Rankine Grashoff theory. Adopt M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel.

4. Design an interior panel of a flat slab for a commercial building. Size of the (20)
panels is 5 m X 6m, LL is 6kN/m2. The columns are circular in shape having a
diameter of 450 mm at the corners of the panel.

UNIT- III

5. Design a silo of diameter 6 m and height 24 m. Grains of density 8 kN/m3 (20)

having an angle of repose = 30o is to be stored in it.

6. Design the side walls and hopper bottom of a 3 m X 3m bunker to store 300 kN (20)
of coal having a density of 9kN/m3. Angle of repose is 26o.

UNIT- IV

7. A rectangular slab 3.25m X 5.25m is simply supported. The slab carries a (20)
service load of 6kN/m2. Using M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel, design the slab
if i) it is isotropically reinforced and ii) it is orthotrophically reinforced with 0.75
as coefficient of orthotropy.

8. With neat sketches, explain the characteristic features of yield line patterns. (20)
Derive an expression for computing yield line moment for an othrotropically
reinforced simply supported rectangular slabs.

UNIT- V

9. Explain with sketches the detailing of columns and beam column joints. Also (20)
differentiate between expansion and contraction joints in buildings.

10. Write a note on increasing the ductility of masonry structures and increasing (20)
the ductility of a beam.
