II. Main Differences (10 mins)
A. Film Aesthetics a. It’s the study of film design using its different elements such as movement, color, shape, lines, pattern, ETC b. Pag sinabi mong film aesthetics, you should imagine what you see on the screen as the canvas and the content as the painting itself. c. Examples of films brimming with aesthetics: Silence (scorsese), pan’s labyrinth, saving sally B. Film Substance a. It’s the essence of the film itself which is the feeling you get when watching the film and its impact on you which has nothing to do with style. C. Give a little disclaimer na although the two are vastly different, they are not mutually exclusive. Any film can have both but it’s possible to focus more on one than the other.
III. Style Over Substance (5 mins)
A. When people say style, they refer to Aesthetics. B. Ano ba meaning nun? It’s like kahit gaano kaganda yung art, wala namang silbi or ambag sa lipunan. C. Give examples of films prioritizing style over substance: interstellar, kill bill, scott pilgrim v. the world, once upon a time in hollywood
IV. VERDICT: Which do you prefer? Aesthetics or Substance? (10 mins)
A. Give your opinions on either and choose which you prefer. B. You can either differentiate them based on which is more likable, or reconcile them. It’s up to you. C. Which do you think should filmmakers focus more?
