Simple Present – Structure

The simple present uses base verbs. Here is the structure:
Subject + Base Verb + Object

Here are some examples:

✓ I like pizza. ✓ She lives in Toronto.
✓ You have a brother. ✓ We have a dog.
✓ He lives in Brazil. ✓ They go to school.

For “he”, “she”, and “it” use the third-person verb. This is the same as the base verb, but it has
an “s” on the end:
1. Base Verb ——– play, live, run
2. 3rd Person Verb ——– plays, lives, runs

Here are all the pronouns with conjugations of some common verbs:
I play live want like
You play live want like
He plays lives wants likes
She plays lives wants likes
It plays lives wants likes
We play live want like
They play live want like

You can see the third person verbs have an “s” on the end. Here are some more example
sentences:

Do/Does + Subject + Base Verb

6
Ing. Fin. Evelyn Vanesa Soria Avila ING-150

Examples:

Adverbs of Frequency

Adverbs of frequency describe how often something happens. There are two types of adverbs
of frequency:
✓ Definite: We exactly know how often something happens, and use them at the end of
a sentence.
✓ Indefinite: We do not know how often something happens, and use them before the
main verb, after the modal verb or first auxiliary verb, or after the verb to be.

Adverbs of Indefinite Frequency:

We use some adverbs to describe how frequently we do an activity. These are called adverbs
of frequency and include:

Frequency Adverb of Frequency Example Sentence

100% always I always go to bed before 11 p.m.
90% usually I usually have cereal for breakfast.
80% normally / generally I normally go to the gym.
70% often* / frequently I often surf the internet.
50% sometimes I sometimes forget my wife's birthday.
30% occasionally I occasionally eat junk food.
10% seldom I seldom read the newspaper.
5% hardly ever / rarely I hardly ever drink alcohol.
0% never I never swim in the sea.

The Position of the Adverb in a Sentence

An adverb of frequency goes before a main verb (except with To Be).

Subject + adverb + main verb

I always remember to do my homework.
He normally gets good marks in exams.

16
Ing. Fin. Evelyn Soria ING150

An adverb of frequency goes after the verb To Be.

Subject + to be + adverb
They are never pleased to see me.
She isn't usually bad tempered.

We can also use the following adverbs at the start of a sentence: Usually, normally, often,
frequently, sometimes, occasionally.
• Occasionally, I like to eat Thai food.

BUT we cannot use the following at the beginning of a sentence:

Always, seldom, rarely, hardly, ever, never.

We use hardly ever and never with positive, not negative verbs:
1. She hardly ever comes to my parties.
2. They never say 'thank you'.

action happens or happened. These adverbs are usually placed at the end of the
sentence.
