Minesight 3D: Locking Material Properties: With The Use of Linked Objects

The document discusses how to lock material properties in MineSight 3D by creating a separate material project and linking materials from that project. This prevents others from changing customized material settings and ensures consistency across projects. To lock materials, create a personal material project, customize materials there, and link them to other projects.

MineSight 3D: Locking Material Properties

WITH THE USE OF LINKED OBJECTS

W hen you are making mine designs or mapping information in MineSight 3D (MS3D), it is often
useful to develop some materials that will control the visual appearance of these objects. For
instance, if you are mapping geology, you can create a certain display for each type of lithology
which would control the coloring, the line type, and more. You can spend considerable time setting materials
just the way you like. After all that adjusting, you may not want a coworker changing the setup. In this article
we will highlight a way to lock the materials.
All MS3D material objects reside in the “materials” folder. This
folder is the only place where you can create and store materials. An
alternative to creating a new material in the materials folder is to link
to a material from another directory.

A recommended approach to storing and locking

materials is to create a second MS3D project. This
will be your personal material project. Within the
material project you can create all the custom
materials that you like. Also, you can copy your
favorite existing custom materials from any
number of projects to the materials folder in your
personal material project.
To use your custom materials in your current
working project, right-click the materials folder
of the Data Manager and create a New | Link.
Browse to your personal material project and
choose your custom material. A linked material
will be created in the materials folder. You will
notice that the linked material displays the icon for
a linked material and has a read-only shield.
From this point, any attempts to change the
material properties from within the current
working project are blocked. Accessing the
material properties through the materials folder

the same result: the colors, node styles, element
visibility, label fonts… all properties are fixed and
