What I Need To Know: Comparing Numbers Up To 10 000 Using Relation Symbols

This document provides instruction on comparing numbers up to 10,000 using relation symbols. It begins with an introduction explaining the importance of comparing numbers and the learning objectives. It then provides examples of comparing numbers using relation symbols like greater than (>), less than (<), and equal to (=). The document explains how to use a number line to determine which number is greater or less than the other. Later sections provide practice problems comparing multiple-digit numbers and applying the skills to real-world scenarios. The goal is for students to learn to effectively compare numbers up to 10,000.

Module 5 COMPARING NUMBERS UP TO 10 000 USING RELATION

SYMBOLS

What I Need to Know

Welcome to another module! When you are working with numbers, it is

important to know when one number is greater or smaller than another. This will help
you in solving various problems involving numbers or quantities. After completing this
module, you are expected to compare numbers up to 10 000 using relation symbols.
(M3NS-Ib-12.3)
Essential Learning Competencies: Quarter 1, Week 2

What I Know
Let us check your prior knowledge about comparing numbers by answering the
questions below. Choose the best answer
1. Which of the following numbers is the smallest?
A. 7 325
B. 5 732
C. 8 569
D. 6 985
2. Which of the following numbers is the largest?
A. 1 709
B. 7 091
C. 0 917
D. 9 170

Fill in the blanks with the symbols¿ ,>,∨¿.

3. 12____21
4. 199____201
Tell whether the statement is TRUE or FALSE.
11. Two numbers are equal if their digits are the same, regardless of order or position
in the numbers. __________
Good job! You are now ready for the next set of activities.

Page |1
What’s In
Look at these pair of numbers, 3418 and 1738. Can you round off these to the
nearest thousands? Hundreds? Tens?
3418 1738
Thousands 3000 2000
Hundreds 400 700
Tens 20 40
Furthermore, in the previous module, you have learned about giving the place
value of numbers. Every number has a place value. Place value can be defined as the
value represented by a number on the basis of its position.
Give the place value of the underlined number.

1. 368
2. 1 482
3. 745
4. 1 425
5. 936

What’s New
The focus of this module is the comparison between two numbers, deciding
which one is less or greater than the other. Study the situation below and answer the
questions that follow.

Pedro, Juan, Maria, and Ana are siblings. Their father gave them
money as their baon everyday. They were advised to save the extra money
from their baon. Pedro saved 3 635, Juan had 2 987, Maria got 2 812 while
Ana gathered 4, 200.

Questions:
1. Who among the siblings had the biggest savings/ ipon?
2. Who among the siblings had the least savings/ ipon?
3. Between Pedro and Maria, who had more savings/ ipon?
4. Between Juan and Ana, who had the less savings/ ipon?
Page |2
5. Who had more combined savings/ ipon, boys or girls?
What Is It
Below are important terminologies, notations and symbols that you must learn
and remember when you compare numbers.

We use the following signs to compare numbers:

Symbol Usage Example
¿ When two numbers are
the same, we use the 4=4
“equal to” sign
¿ When one number is
smaller than another, we 3¿5
use the “less than” sign
¿ When one number is
bigger than another, we 9¿6
use the “greater than”
sign
When you get confused by the symbols, just remember that the open side
should always face towards the bigger number. Also, you may think of it as a hungry
mouth which always wants to eat the greater number.
Examples:

Fill in the blank with the appropriate symbol.

a. 5____8
We can use the number line to see which one is less or greater than the other.

Since 5 is to the left of 8, then 5 is less than 8.

5<8
b. 250_____150
Again, we can use the number line to see which one is less or greater than the other.

Page |3
Since 250 is to the right of 150, then 250 is greater than 150.
250>150
c. 373_____337
We can use our knowledge of place value to determine the smaller or
bigger number.

373 337

3 hundreds = 3 hundreds
7 tens ¿ 3 tens
So, 373>337

When the first digit is equal consider the preceding place value.
d. 9 875______8 975

9 875 8 975

9 thousands ¿ 8 thousands
So, 9 875> 8 975

e. 7 001_______7 010

7 001 7 010

7 thousands =7 thousands
0 hundreds = 0 hundreds
0 tens ¿ 1 tens
So, 7 001<7 010

What’s More
Let us try another set of more challenging problems about comparing two numbers
using relation symbols.
A. Compare the follwing set of numbers using arm position as illustrated below.

1. 3 345 ____ 5 263

2. 6 348 ____ 6 232
3. 8 806 ____ 8 315
4. 2 040 ____ 2 000 + 0 + 40 + 0
5. 4 076 ____ 5 000 + 400 + 70 + 6

B. Write >, <, and = in the blank.

1. 10____2
2. 1 001____1 010
3. 9 969____9 969
4. 2 002____2 002
5. 8 765____ 8 987
Great job! Get ready for the next challenge!

What I Have
Learned
To wrap up what you have learned in this module, try to answer the questions
below.
1. How do we compare numbers?

2. Write the missing symbols in the blank.

To compare numbers, we use the following symbols:

_____ for “greater than”; _____ for “less than”, and ___
for “equal to”.

3. Is comparing numbers important to our daily lives? Why do you say so?

Page |5
4. In what instance in your daily lives comparing numbers helpful?

Very good! You are now ready for the final challenge in this module.

What I Can Do

In this activity, you will answer problems related to real-life situations using
what you have learned about comparing numbers.
1. You want to buy a bicycle which costs 3 750 pesos. However, you only have 1 880
pesos. You need to add 1 870 pesos in order to buy a bicycle. Is 1 880 pesos less or
greater than 1 870 pesos?

2. Grandfather has 8 372 ducks and 6 483 chicken in his farm. How does the number
of chickens compare with the number of ducks.

3. In month of November my parents saved PHP 12 499, in month of December they

saved PHP 11 992. In what month do they saved less?
Excellent work! You did a great job in applying what you have learned

B. 6
C. 7
Page |6
D. 8
4. In the number 2 749, which digit has the smallest place value?
A. 2
B. 4
C. 7
D. 9
5. Which of the following sets of numbers are greater than 90 but less than 95?
A. 90, 91, 92, 95
B. 91, 92, 93, 94
C. 92, 93, 94, 95
D. 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95

Fill in the blanks with the symbols <,>, or =.

6. 29____92
7. 991____919
8. 5 990____ 9 950
9. 880_____ 808
10. 555____555

Congratulations! You have successfully finished the entire module.

You have now the enough knowledge to complete the next module on
