 Environmental Studies Environmental Studies refers to the study of the


environment. It is not restricted to the point of view of one particular discipline
but involves all disciplines that may affect the environment in any possible
way.
 It involves the study and understanding of the fact that even a single
phenomenon can affect the environment in a variety of ways with varying
degrees of complexity, and each of these effects can be understood from
different perspectives rooted in different disciplines.

Importance of Environmental Studies Environmental

Environmental Studies requires skills that encompass a range of disciplines including


chemistry, biology, earth sciences, atmospheric science, statistics, mathematics, and
geography.

Need of Environmental Study

Need for Public Awareness Earth resources are dwindling and our environment is
being increasingly degraded by human activities and hence something needs to be
done. Government alone cannot perform all the clean-up functions. An
individual/group effort in their own every possible way has to be made to protect
our environment. Mass public awareness: newspapers, radio, television strongly
influences public opinion on conserving our environment.

Various Disciplines

1. Environmental Science:
It deals with the scientific study of environmental system (air, water,
soil, and land), the inherent or induced changes on organisms and the
environmental damages incurred as a result of human interaction with
the environment.
2. Environmental Engineering:
It deals with the study of technical processes involved in the protection
of the environment from the potentially deleterious effects of human
activity and improving the environmental quality for the health and
wellbeing of humans.
Environmental engineering demonstrates how the available tools should
be used to design efficient control and treatment devices for
environmental protection.
3. Environmental Management:
Environmental management promotes due regard for physical, social
and economic environment of the enterprise or projects. It encourages
planned investment at the start of the production chain rather than forced
investment in cleaning up at the end. It seeks to develop integrated
systems rather than unrelated bits and pieces and provides for a good
relationship with and concern for the local community rather than
paying expensive legal fee to fight it.

Multidisciplinary nature of environment

 Environment is complex and actually made up of many different environments,


including natural, constructed and cultural environments, environmental studies
is the inter disciplinary examination of how biology, geology, politics policy
studies, law, geology, religion engineering, chemistry and economics combine
to inform the consideration of humanity’s effects on the natural world.
 This subject educates the students to appreciate the complexity of
environmental issues and citizens and experts in many fields. By studying
environmental science, students may develop a breadth of the interdisciplinary
and methodological knowledge in the environmental fields that enables them to
facilitate the definition and solution of environmental problems.
 It is essentially a multidisciplinary approach and its components include
Biology, Geology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Sociology, Health
Sciences, Anthropology, Economics, Statistics and Philosophy. It is essentially
a multidisciplinary approach.
