Advanced Grammar – Emphasis!

Exercise 1 is using a mix of different emphatic grammar. To get you started, here are the missing
words to fill the gaps. Which word will you allocate to each sentence?

all – means – least – what – did – do – searched – own – where – so

Exercise 2 also uses a variety of different emphatic phrases.

Complete these sentences so they are true for you. Then share with your group.

1. What I can’t stand is / are …..........


2. All the world needs is …................
3. I’m not in the least bit worried about.............
4. I felt very tired indeed when...........
5. ….............. was the one who taught me most about money.

Exercise 3 also used a mix of emphatic phrases.

Exercise 4 focuses on fronting and inversion. Before you try it, complete these sentences so they are
true for you, then share them in your group.

3. I had a dispute about an online purchase. What happened in the end was...........

Exercise 5 focuses on creating emphasis using adverbs. Before you try it, complete these sentences
so they are true for you and share in your group. Stress the bold words when speaking.

1. I have no interest whatsoever in.........................


2. After a challenging day, I simply have to …........................

4. ….................. is a sheer waste of time!

Exercise 6 is mainly focusing on using question words and ‘it was’ to create specific emphasis.

This task requires scanning for correlating vocabulary and matching via context.
Exercise 7 focuses on negative emphatic terms.

Before you try it, complete these sentences so they are true for you and share with your group.

Stress the bold words when speaking.

1. I know it was their birthday but I do think they could have ….......................
2. It’s by no means certain that …................................
3. There may be lots of ….............. in …................... but there are none at all in ….................

Exercise 8 focuses on a mixture of ‘what’, prepositional phrases, adverbs and adjectives to create
specific emphasis.
