Graphs & Transformations Notes by Trockers

This document provides information about graphs and transformations. It defines linear, quadratic, power, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions. It discusses sketching graphs by showing critical points like intercepts and turning points. Examples are provided on sketching graphs of factorized functions and applying transformations like translation, reflection, and stretch. Transformations include moving graphs right or left along the x-axis, up or down along the y-axis, stretching vertically or horizontally, and reflecting across axes. Multiple transformations can be combined and expressed as single transformations.

Sketching Graphs

o Sketching is different from plotting

o When sketching graphs we only show critical points i.e. the points where the graphs cuts
the axes (intercepts)
(a) The graph cuts the axis when
(b) The graph cuts the axis when
o When asked to show the turning/stationary points we apply differentiation i.e.

(a) At turning points

(b) When we have a minimum turning point

(c) When we have a maximum turning point
