Examples of Mean, Median and Mode

The document discusses various measures of central tendency including mean, median, and mode. It provides examples of calculating the mean age and mean score of students. It also shows how to calculate the weighted mean grade of a student based on their grades in different subjects. Finally, it demonstrates how to find the mean, median, and mode of grouped data using class boundaries and frequencies.

Measures of Central Tendency

1. Determine the mean age of the students.

Mean = 19+21+18+17+16+21+20+18+19+19
10
= 188 /10
= 18.8 or 19
The mean age of the students is 19 years old.

2. Determine the mean score of the students.

Mean = 93+65+87+56+99+76+58+87+76+93+68+69
12
= 927 / 12
= 77.25

3. Determine his weighted mean grade.

Subjects No. of Units Final Solutions f.x

Grade
Math 1 3 2.5 3x2.5 7.5
Lab Science 5 1.5 5x1.5 7.5
English 1 3 2.25 3x2.25 6.75
Com Lab 2 3.0 2x3.0 6
Pilipino 1 3 2.25 3x2.25 6.75
Accounting 1 6 2.5 6x2.5 15
Ʃw=22 Ʃwx = 49.5

Weighted Mean = Ʃwx / Ʃw = 49.5 / 22

= 2.25 Grade

Average

Average = 2.5 + 1.5 + 2.25 + 3.0 + 2.25 + 2.5

6
= 14 / 6
= 2.3 or 2.25

The average grade

4. Compute the value of the mean, median, and mode for this grouped data.

Solutions:

Cumulative Class Midpoint Value f.x

Frequency
2 73 + 75 = 148/2 = 74 2 x 74 = 148
2+6=8 76 + 78 = 154/2 = 77 6 x 77 = 462
8 + 12 = 20 79 + 81 = 160/2 = 80 12 x 80 = 980
20 + 16 = 36 82 + 84 = 166/2 = 83 16 x 83 = 1328
36 + 18 = 54 85 + 87 = 172/2 = 86 18 x 86 = 1548
54 + 39 = 93 88 + 90 = 178/2 = 89 39 x 89 = 3471
93 + 36 = 129 91 + 93 = 184/2 = 92 36 x 92 = 3312
129 + 21 = 150 94 + 96 = 190/2 = 95 21 x 95 = 1995
150 + 5 = 155 97 + 99 = 196/2 = 98 5 x 98 = 490

Mean = Ʃfx / Ʃf

= 88. 47 or 88.5

B. Median

Ʃf / 2 = 155 / 2 = 77.5

The Median Class is 88 – 90

C=3

L = 87.5

Fm = 39

CFbm = 54

Median = L + C (Ʃf/2 - CFbm)

Fm
= 87.5 + 3 (77.5 – 54)
39

= 87.5 + 3 (0.6)

= 87.5 + 1.8

Median = 89.3

C. Mode

Modal Class 88 – 90

C=3

L = 87.5

∆1 = 39 -18 = 21

∆2 = 39 – 36 = 3

Mode = L + C (∆1 / ∆1 + ∆2)

= 87.5 + 3 (21/ 21 + 3)

= 87.5 + 3 (0.87)

= 87.5 + 2.6

Mode = 90.1 or 90
