OVERVIEW
Why is there a need to study the world? Whether you are aware of it or not, you are already a citizen of
the world. This module will be your guide. This course introduces student to the contemporary world by
examining the multifaceted phenomenon of globalization. Using the various disciplines of the social
science, it examines the economic, social, political, technological, and other transformations that have
created an increasing awareness of the interconnectedness of peoples and places around the globe.

Globalization vs. Globalism: Globalization is the “process” and Globalism is the “ideology”.

TYPES OF GLOBALIZATION- Economic, political and Socio-cultural Globalization

ACTIVITY 1

1. Make a concept map about Globalization

2. Go to your room, make an inventory of everything you have in possession (for example:
television, shoes, clothes, Books etc.) Organize your inventory into two categories, first, “things
made in the Philippines”, and second, “things made abroad” and write the brand name and the
countries of origin (Made in what country?).(for example: Phone- Brand: Apple- made in USA)
Determine which country made the most items inside your home.

The Attributes for Today’s Global System

World politics today has four key attributes. First, there are countries or states that are independent and
govern themselves. Second, these countries interact with each other through diplomacy. Third, there
are international interactions, like United Nations, facilitate interaction. Fourth, beyond simply
facilitating meeting between states, and international organization, also take on lives on their own.

1. Origin of this System

It’s all start from having a “country” or what academics also call the nation states.

Difference of Nation and State

States refer to a country and its governments. The states has four features.

1. Territory
2. Population
3. Governments
4. Sovereign
Nation- according to Benedict Anderson, its an “imagine community”. It is limited because it does go
beyond a “given boundary” and because right and responsibilities are mainly the privilege and concern
of the citizens of the nation.

The liberal internationalism and socialist internationalism.

related? (10 pts)

peacekeepers), their responsibilities, the places where they have been involved in the last 50
