CATEGORY I / CATEGORY II

All EPIRBS, by regulation, when they are out of their brackets and in the water would start
transmitting. This is called Automatic Activation. (All EPIRBs in or out of their brackets can be
activated manually.)

There are two types of brackets available. They are Category 1 Automatic deployment and
Category 2 Manual deployment.

Category 1 bracket is designed to release the beacon when the Hydrostatic release in the
bracket reaches a depth of 1.5 to 4 meters or about 4 to 14 feet. The regulation specifies a
range of depth for deployment to allow for different water temperatures which will affect the
release depth. Hydros are to be replaced every two years. Beacon can also be manually
deployed from a Category 1 bracket.

Category 1 brackets were originally designed and mandated for commercial shipping vessels.
The original intent was to provide a means for communicating distress when all else has failed.
The worst case scenario is a vessel sinking or capsizing within seconds and the crew is totally
focused on just getting out hopefully into immersion suits or life rafts. The 406 beacon would
release from its bracket, float to the surface and alert the outside world that they needed help
fast.

Category 1 beacons are not tied into their brackets. They will float to the surface when
released and be transmitting when they get there. The lanyard supplied with the brackets
allows survivors to secure the beacon to themselves, their life raft or what ever floating piece
of debris they are clinging to.
Category 2 beacons need to be manually released from their bracket. They can be mounted
above or below deck. The mounting location should be protected from outside influences i.e.
green water, traffic impacts, cabin doors ect. Some people prefer to keep their beacon in a
ditch bag without the bracket, which is OK, if the bag is going to be in a dry spot on the boat.
If you mount the Cat 2 bracket above deck, you can always get a second bracket to store the
beacon under lock and key when not under way.

Regardless of what bracket style you choose, the beacon should be placed in a location where
is protected from abuse but yet accessible in a hurry.

By the way, EPIRBs work best when floating in the water. You can hold it in your hand or
place it on the deck, but their antennas are tuned to work best when floating in the water.

Please don’t forget that Beacons need to be registered with NOAA. Fill out the form that came
with the beacon or go to www.beaconregistration.noaa.gov
