Field Maries 33" Adt: blackish brown except white head and white tail. Imm:
blackish brown; dull white tall base; dull whitish mottling under wings. See
Golden Eagle.
Field Marks 15" Not streaked in any plumage. Adt: dark gray above, paJe gray
below; reddish brown thighs; narrow whitish bars on blackish tail. Imm: dark
grayish brown; collar and underparts buff.
Field Marks 24" Like Common Black-Hawk, but larger; slightly longer-tailed
and longer-legged; flight appears more labored; tail pattern differs (in adult).
Adt: uptacs, narrow bar near tail base, broad bar farther out, and very narrow
tail tip white; may appear to have one white tall bar and white rump patch.
Field Marks 22" ln tops of low trees or large shrubs or flying rather low. Adt:
black, with broadly rufous wrist patch and thighs; white untacs, uptacs, tail
base, and tail tip. Imm: dark rich brown, and some tawny brown, above; heavily
streaked below; reddish wrist patch and thighs; tail narrowly barred, white at
base.
Field Marks 38" Very Large; very broad wings; powerfuJ legs; rather long tail.
Adt: ragged split crest; hindneck, upperparts, and broad breast band black;
mostly white below; head mostly gray; heavy bill black; tail broadly barred
black and pale gray. Imm : pale gray above, may be mottled; whitish below; crest
dark and white; one broad black tail band. Birds acquire adult plumage in stages
over several years.

Field Marks 24" Blackish above; tail long, black with several whitish bars. Light
morph adt: underparts and collar white. Light morph imm: buffy below;
more or less barred with dark brown. Buff morph adt: underparts and collar
buffy or pale tawny brown. Dark morph adt: underparts and collar mostly
blackish, like upperparts; belly may be barred whitish. Dark morph imm: like
dark morph adult, but brown, not blackish, and belly and untacs barred light
brown.
Field Marks 12" Streaked below. M: bluish gray above; tai.1 barred black and
gray. F+imm: brown above; tall dark brown and gray. See American Kestrel.
Habitat Secluded cliffs or ledges, rocky canyons, and (especially winter) open
country, coastal areas.
Field Marks 19" Dark bluish gray above; black crown with broad black ear
wedge down side of face; spotted and barred below, except whitish throat and
breast; tail barred. lmm: like adult, but dark brown; heavily streaked below. See

like that of Chimney Swift or Vaux's Swift.

and with long white patch on wing; rump patch white. F: like male, but chin
and upper throat white. Juv + part of 1st win: mostly barred blackish and
brown above and below, with little or no trace of adult pattern, except on wing;
gradually acquires adult pattern and colors through winter and early spring.

bare skin.

Habitat Lower branches in dense humid forest or overgrown partial clearings.

Field Marks 5" Moves often, wings droopin.g, tail partly spread, bright rump
patch usually very conspicuous. Brownish olive above; blackish wings and tail;
underparts tawny to whitish on throat and yellowish on belly; rump bright
creamy yellow.

Field Marks 6" Like Eastern Wood-Pewee, but yellower below; head darker; no

of plumage dark purplish blue.
Field Marks 21" Like Common Raven, but neck feathers white at base (usually
concealed); bill shorter; throat feathers not as shaggy.
