Reflection Paper of the Article Case Study of Shanghai Tower

The case study is about the world’s tallest building in 2015, Shanghai Tower. I know that skyscrapers contribute
the most to the carbon emission produced by the structure since it requires an enormous amount of building
materials, works, and systems. I’ve always thought that technology is just the cause of the climate change we are
experiencing. However, who would have thought that Skyscrapers could be a symbol or way in promoting the
solutions that we do have for the present problem of the world. I never thought that a single building could create
a community.

Whenever I see a skyscraper, I am mesmerized by its beauty and grace. I always appreciate how the builders
created such a massive structure considering the size of a human. But as time went by and I became an
architecture student, I became fully aware of how a skyscraper is not just for the aesthetic but serves a purpose
that made me realize why people needed architecture. Skyscraper is complicated by their design and system. I
learned how they planned the whole structure from the start and its primary goal as a symbol of innovation in the
Lujiazui district. Though in the first part of the case study, I questioned the credibility of the structure since a lot of
site elements are against the requirements needed to be able to build this dream building. And learning at the
institution is a designer must find the right site for the project you want to develop. But that is how I realized that
innovation is essential in architecture. Nothing is impossible with technology, and going sustainable doesn’t
require no technology at all. Being sustainable and considered ecological friendly doesn’t have to be purely raw.
Still, instead, we could use the technology that we have right now to integrate into the solutions that everyone
wants to apply. Just like in the Shanghai Tower, Gensler Architects and other allied professionals merged
different innovative ideas and solutions to be able to build the tallest building in 2015 and one of the most
sustainable buildings in the world.

As an architecture student, I agree with the concept of the Shanghai Tower article that designers have many
challenges when designing super tall structures. It is not easy as it looks on the outer facade of the building since
mainly you can only see two to three main things in the design if you’re not knowledgeable about it. But the
facade is not essential if the structure’s core is not well built and planned. Considering that they wanted to create
a community in a structure makes the whole project more complex because of the different spaces they put on.
Thinking and analyzing all of the data available in the article requires my brain to apply all of the learnings that
I’ve got ever since my first year to understand the complexity of the design of the shanghai tower. The history of
architecture since the design of the Shanghai tower corresponded to the pyramid format of Egyptian architecture,
which used a triangle shape to be able to withstand all of the occurrences that would cause the building to fall
down. In each phase of the construction, the size is getting smaller. I learned and incorporated building
technology courses in this article to understand deeply how they came up with the exact design that the
Shanghai tower has now. Since the analysis of materials and the test they provided to keep up with the China
Seismic Design Code and China’s government’s 33% green space requirement made me realize the importance
of computations and that in design test and trial and error is a thing.

Reading the article made me realize many ideas as a future architect of our society. Technology might be seen
as a villain by many humans, but the humans who use technology for evil doing are the ones we need to be
aware of. It allowed me to be critically aware of the process of designing a skyscraper that I had only seen in
pictures before. The study’s authors Jun Xia, Dennies Poon, and Douglas C. Mass open the eye of the public
about architecture, skyscrapers in general, and technology. If we incorporate these two, we could achieve the
envision that we have in our creative minds. I appreciate the Skyscraper because it can be a sustainable building
too, and many professionals are wanted to build more sustainable buildings now. However, building skyscrapers
can still be off-limit to many cities around the world but promoting how they build the community’s relationship in
Lujiazui District with the developer helps many future projects innovations in the world that will help us resolve
our global problems like climate change and to create a better community life for the people.
