My Own Philosophy

After reading various philosophical perspectives on the self, the author developed their own philosophy that the self is the body itself. The body connects one to the world and allows them to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and purpose. While the mind also plays a role by analyzing experiences and bringing knowledge to the self, the body represents who one is and without it, one would not know themselves.

After reading all the philosophical perspectives on the self, make your own

philosophy of the self incorporating the ideas you learned from the different
philosophers.

“My Philosophy of the Self”

“The unexamined life is not worth living.” – Socrates

Questioning our own self is an everyday learning process. It takes a long

journey to know oneself but it is a human’s life instinct to look for the answers in
order to gain deeper insights about themselves. We sometimes tend to even
question our existence in this world. What is our purpose of living? Who am I as a
living?

As a person, one’s existence in this world is defined by different

philosophical perspectives which allow a person to identify his or her own self
towards self-knowledge.

According to Socrates, knowing one’s capabilities and potential can be

acquired through self-knowledge. In line with this, David Hume claimed that this
“self-knowledge” is can be attained through experience and sensation being
acquired in person’s daily lives. It means that self is can be defined as an individual’s
own reflective consciousness in which the more a person study about self, the more
he or she will know about the self, our world, our life, our relationship with
others, our meaning, our destiny and end.

On the other hand, St. Augustine defined our existence as humans, as

composed of body that is bound to die and stay on earth and soul which is an
immortal one. I have observed that this idea of St. Augustine is the same with
Plato’s idea for claiming that the soul still exists even after death. Simply, these
two philosophers imply that the presence of our soul therefore distinguishes a
living human body from a non-living one and that our body is just temporary.

Other philosophers such as Rene Descartes, John Locke, and Immanuel

Kant perceived consciousness or memory, thoughts, senses, and mind as vital
parts of the self. Others would perceive experience as a factor needed to fill the

emptiness of oneself. Their contributions to philosophy somehow gave the
people the awareness about exploring the world around them and the advantage
of consciously trying to understand certain variants of life.

In life, we will be faced with several ideas and arguments which present
themselves as “truths.” However, these ideas tend intend to give persons a
wider perspective in understanding the self. I will help us, humans, perceive
things holistically which requires an individual to have an open mindset and an
ability to get the general sense or impression regarding a situation.

With all the learning acquired from different perspectives of different

philosophers, My own philosophy about self is that, “self is the body itself”. I do
believe that self is a developmental process and has a unique purpose why we
exist, why the “self” exists, why I exist. We all possess the capacity to reflect on
our experiences. Thus, there is a never-ending need to learn and discover.

I perceive self as a body itself because it is the body that connects me to

the world and to others. As I have learned, the body is important as it is the basic
layer of the constitution of a man in order to become a person. My body
represents myself as who I am. Without my body, I won’t be able to know the
“self”. I won’t be able to know my strengths and weaknesses, establish my own
identity and determine my own purpose in life as a person. Self-knowledge also
grows along with one’s understanding of the world and this is essential to the
realization of the self.

In addition, I also believe that the mind possesses the power of knowing
one’s self. It is the mind that dictates our body what to do or what to respond to
a certain situation and who to become. What the mind thinks, the body does.
Without the mind, the body will not be able to act accordingly. It is the mind that
makes people see others as humans. It is the mind that analyzes the experiences
one had encountered in his daily life. It is the mind that brings knowledge to
oneself. So, the mind also plays a vital role in understanding and knowing one’s
self.

In line with this, engaging in philosophical reflection is beneficial for a

person to engage in critical analysis and interpretation of concepts and to know

oneself better. Through reflecting, a person’s mind allows him or her to have
some time for self. It is the time when man allows himself to understand the
characteristics of the self which I believe to have two types; the inner self (the
self that only him can see) and the outer self (the self which other people see).
These types of self when united, forms a body. And that body is what I call “self”.

In conclusion, even there are differences in the philosophy about self,

whatever philosophical belief is present, it is important that a person knows who
he is. It is important to build his own identity as a person so that he will be able
to deal and respond correctly to whatever advertises that may challenge his own
strengths and weaknesses. One should always remember that he is the owner of
his body.

“It is I who controls myself and myself represents who am I. In short, I am

the “self”.
