Brake System - Test and Adjust

SMCS - 4250-036

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and

hot oil.

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system

after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be
caused if this pressure is not released before any service is
done on the hydraulic system.

Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, oil is

cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil
filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is
cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Introduction
The steering clutch hydraulic control valve directs oil from the pressure relief valve to the
steering clutches and to the hydraulic control mechanisms of the brakes.

Follow this procedure in order to test the pressure for the hydraulic control mechanisms
of the brakes. The pressure for the hydraulic control mechanisms of the brakes is not
adjustable.

hydraulic control mechanism. Install tooling (B). Attach tooling (A) to tooling (B) .

5. Start the engine. Warm the power train oil to operating temperature.

6. Disengage the parking brake. Make sure that the transmission selection lever is in
the NEUTRAL position. Make sure that the steering control levers are in the
NEUTRAL position. Operate the engine at LOW IDLE.

7. Move the steering control lever for the left clutch to the FULL LEFT STEER
position. Check the pressure at tooling (A) that is connected to pressure tap (H). The
pressure at tooling (A) should be 2275 kPa (330 psi) minimum. Release the control
lever. The pressure on tooling (A) should return to zero.

Repeat this step for the right brake hydraulic control mechanism. Check the pressure
for the right brake hydraulic control mechanism at tooling (A) that is connected to
pressure tap (L) .

8. Disengage the parking brake. Make sure that the transmission selection lever is in
the NEUTRAL position. Make sure that the steering control levers are in the
NEUTRAL position. Operate the engine at HIGH IDLE.

9. Move the steering control lever for the left clutch to the FULL LEFT STEER
position. Check the pressure at tooling (A) that is connected to pressure tap (H). The
pressure at tooling (A) should be 2550 kPa (370 psi) minimum. Release the control
lever. The pressure on tooling (A) should return to zero.

Repeat this step for the right brake hydraulic control mechanism. Check the pressure
for the right brake hydraulic control mechanism at tooling (A) that is connected to
pressure tap (L) .

10. Disengage the parking brake. Engage the service brake. Make sure that the
transmission selection lever is in the NEUTRAL position. Make sure that the
steering control levers are in the NEUTRAL position. Operate the engine at HIGH
IDLE.

11. Check the pressure at tooling (A) that is connected to pressure tap (H). The pressure
at tooling (A) should be 2620 kPa (380 psi) minimum. Release the service brake.
The pressure on tooling (A) should return to zero.

Repeat this step for the right brake hydraulic control mechanism. Check the pressure
for the right brake hydraulic control mechanism at tooling (A) that is connected to
pressure tap (L) .

12. Disengage the parking brake. Engage the service brake. Make sure that the

steering control levers are in the NEUTRAL position. Operate the engine at LOW
IDLE.

13. Check the pressure at tooling (A) that is connected to pressure tap (H). The pressure
at tooling (A) should be 2380 kPa (345 psi) minimum. Release the service brake.
The pressure on tooling (A) should return to zero.

Repeat this step for the right brake hydraulic control mechanism. Check the pressure
for the right brake hydraulic control mechanism at tooling (A) that is connected to
pressure tap (L) .

14. The pressure relief valve of the sequence relief valve must be tested if the pressure
reading of pressure tap (H) or pressure tap (L) is out of tolerance. Refer to Testing
and Adjusting, "Sequence Relief Valve - Test and Adjust" that is in this manual for
the testing and adjusting procedure.

Note: If the mechanism has been assembled with new parts or shims (4) behind plate (5)
have been lost, use the following steps in order to make the adjustment.

1. Install a rod that has a 9.53 mm (0.375 inch) diameter through hole (2) that is in
support assembly (3) and through bellcrank (1) .

2. Hold lever assembly (8) against the back plate of support assembly (3) .

3. Spread apart lever assembly (6) and lever assembly (7) from each other in order to
remove the slack that is in the linkage.

4. Measure distance (A) between lever assembly (6) and plate (5) with a feeler gauge.
Distance (A) must be 0.25 ± 0.13 mm (0.010 ± 0.005 inch).

5. Add or remove shims (4) between the plate and the support assembly in order to get
correct distance (A) .

6. Remove the rod from the holes. Repeat this procedure for both brake mechanisms.

Adjustment of the Brakes

Illustration 7 g01297728

1. Install support assemblies (12), hydraulic mechanisms and the levers that are
fastened to the mechanisms.

2. Turn socket (11) clockwise until the brake band (13) is tight on the brake drum.
Turn socket (11) counterclockwise. Use 1 1/2 turns or use nine clicks in order to
adjust the brake band to the proper clearance.

Note: A click is the noise that is heard when a detent is felt.

3. After adjusting the brakes, check dimension (B) while the pedal is depressed. If
dimension (B) is not 3.0 ± 3.0 mm (0.12 ± 0.12 inch), adjust rod (9) and rod (10)
equally in order to obtain the correct clearance.

4. Adjust rod (14) so that dimension (C) is 165 ± 20 mm (6.5 ± 0.75 inch).

5. After rod (9) has been adjusted check the operation of the parking brake. Place the
parking brake lever in the ENGAGED position. Press the brake pedal. Release the
brake pedal. The brake pedal should remain in the PRESSED position.

6. Press the brake pedal. Place the parking brake lever in the DISENGAGED position.
The brake pedal should return to the RAISED position.
