Verb moods are classification that indicate the attitude of the speaker. Two common verb
moods are indicative and subjunctive.
The indicative mood is used for statements of fact. The subjunctive is a verb mood that
expresses one of the following:
a wish or desire
a request or demand for action
a condition that is highly unlikely or contrary to fact.
Subjunctive verbs are often found in clauses that begin with if, that, as if, or as though.
In the subjunctive mood, the subject-verb agreement is different than it is in the
indicative mood.
Indicative mood: I was young.
Subjunctive mood: I wish I were young.
Indicative mood: I am pleased that he arrives on time each day.
Subjunctive mood: I suggested he arrive on time each day.
Avoid using the incorrect verb form to express the subjunctive mood, especially for third-
person singular verbs and all forms of the verb be.
