1.0 PURPOSE
To ensure that correct alloy materials are properly identified as to their alloy type and
installed as intended & to avoid any mix up of material on the basis of approximate
chemical analysis during and after fabrication & assembling.
2.0 SCOPE
2.1 This procedure applies to the requirements for on job PMI to be performed at shop floor
for Parent metal and Weld Tag No: PV-506 & PV-507 (U-FA3202/4202).
2.2 The Identification shall be carried out on the basis of approximate chemical analysis of
major alloying elements like Cr, Ni, Mo etc.
2.3 The scope of this procedure includes but shall not limited to PMI of the material listed
below:
i) Low alloy steel
ii) Ferrite, Martensitic & austenitic SS.
3.0 EQUIPMENT
Portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer
Make : Niton XRF Alloy Analyser
Model : Xl2-800 / Xlt-898
The instrument shall has been serviced within 6 months of the time of use. The date of last
service shall be stated in PMI report.
4.0 REFERANCE DOCUMENTS
4.1 Approved Inspection and Test plan, ASME Sec VIII Div.1 2015, API RP 578, Customer
specifications and Approved drawings.
5.0 PERSONNEL
Persons carrying out PMI testing shall be qualified, well conversant to the use including
safety factors of the instrument.
5.1 Operator qualification certificates for use of the instrument to be submitted to the client’s
representative whenever they require.
6.0 METHOD
6.1 The analysis shall be done using quantitative multi elements analysis technique.
6.2 Instrument shall be calibrated for specified mode before to carry out PMI with standard
reference samples according to the manufacturer’s specification as given in instruction
manual. Calibration of instrument shall be verified with standard samples before each use.
Traceability of the samples shall be maintained. Calibration of instrument shall be as per
API RP 578.
6.3 Alloying Elements Required for Positive Material Identification during PMI shall be as
mentioned below
SA193GRB7 : Cr, Mo
SS304 : Cr, Ni
6.5 The surface to be examined shall be smooth, free from dirt, grease, oil & scale. Weld metal
shall be tested after removal of slag or particles from the weld surface. Joints welded from
both sides shall be PMI tested on both the surfaces. Surface to be prepared by light grinding
or solvent cleaning.
