Introduction
Road traffic accidents (RTAs) are described as "any occurrence that arises on a
way or road open to public traffic causing in one or more persons being injured or killed,
where at least one moving means of transportation is involved"1 the World Health
Organization (WHO) estimated that 1.25 million people died as a result of RTAs
worldwide. This corresponds to one fatality from traffic accidents every 25 seconds.
RTAs are the leading cause of death for people between the ages of 15 and 29. Before,
during, and after the occurrence of any traumatic episode connected to a road collision,
factors relating to the human, the vehicle, and the environment are thought to play a
significant impact. These include the state of the road, a driver’s lack of familiarity with
traffic laws, the vehicle’s speed, the number of passengers, the car’s make and model,
and the driver’s age.
Road signs or signals (RS) are necessary to give you warnings to avoid road
accidents, especially if the place is new to you. It guides you to having a safe trip to your
destination. It raises people’s awareness of whether a sign is under construction, a
crurve part, or has another meaning. Road signs fulfill a valuable role by promoting
safety to drivers on their way to their destination. Indeed, Koyuncu and Amado (2008)
claimed that RSs are “used to regulate, warn, or guide road users so as to provide safer
traffic environments.” According to Drucker (1984), signs, as part of the linguistic
landscape, help readers understand their immediate surroundings. Road signs are a
great help to people to avoid or reduce road accidents, but poor or unclear road signs
make people lose their way and engage in road accidents.
Due to their mental and biological nature, children are more susceptible, so it is
vital to foster attention and develop their familiarity with traffic regulations. The goal of
education on traffic laws and rules is to increase knowledge and comprehension of
them. Additionally, it aids in educating children about risk awareness and personal
safety. In today’s culture, where more and more women are driving, it is crucial to
educate them on how to avoid becoming involved in traffic accidents. In turn, this would
raise public awareness of the need for road safety measures.
This study aimed to make a possible action and recommendations for the
government authorities regarding road signage construction to make road and danger
signs to the extent of its effectiveness. The researcher conducted this study to analyze
and to have a concrete explanation and results to the problem which arose from why
Filipinos continue violating the vast road signage without hesitation.
