Background / Rationale: Facebook Messenger is a free application

used for instant messaging, sharing photos, videos, audio recordings
and for group chats. The app, which is free to download can be used
for communicating with someone on Facebook and phone contacts.
The use of Facebook Messenger Application steadily increases amongst
the student population. There is much talk about the impacts that
Facebook Messenger Application causes on the communication skills of
a student.
The researchers are prompted to conduct this study in
the hope that they can help students, educators and parents to
gradually know the impact of using Facebook Messenger Application
since it is a common tool that many of the students are actually using.
The situation is also observed in Consolatrix College of
Toledo City where many of the students have access to Facebook
Messenger Application.

Purpose of the Study/Setting: This study determined and analyzed

the impact of Facebook Messenger Application to the respondents as
regards to their age as well as gender and their perception towards the
impact of Facebook Messenger Application.

Study Design/Methods: This research used the descriptive

evaluate style to determine the Impact of Facebook Messenger
Application to the Consolatricians. The qualitative approach was used
to analyze the respondents’ age as well as their gender and how they
perceived the impact.
6

Data Analysis: Communicating through Facebook Messenger

Application enhanced their vocabulary and reading comprehension as
they practice reading and editing their messages. Although they
are not always confident with their verbal skills when communicating
through Facebook Messenger Application, they were at comfort and
were able to communicate at ease and although they don’t always
engaged themselves in person to person conversation, they still use
nonverbal cues and express themselves more. Furthermore, despite
using Facebook Messenger Application, it does not displace their face-
to-face communication.
Most of the Consolatricians’ perceptions towards the
impact of Facebook Messenger Application is very good, which means
that they find the impact positive and approving to them.

Conclusion: Communicating online via Facebook Messenger

Application has an impact on the way the Consolatricians give and
receive information and interact towards other people.
As majority of the students perceived Facebook Messenger
Application a positive impact thus this results to help build and
maintain good communication skills.

Recommendations: Whatever the age or gender of the person who

use Facebook Messenger Application, he or she must use it wisely and
accurately. The perception of the respondents towards the impact of
using Facebook Messenger Application which is very good can be
helpful to the other user to continue use this application when
communicating online.Future researchers may provide more factors to
determine.

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Rationale

Facebook Messenger is a free mobile messaging app used

for instant messaging, sharing photos, videos, audio recordings and for

group chats. The app, which is free to download, can be used to

communicate with your friends on Facebook and with your phone

contacts.

According to Wigmore (2016), Facebook Messenger is a

mobile application that enables chat, voice and video communication

between the social media site’s web-based messaging and

smartphones. (Specific capabilities vary according to the user’s device

and geographic location).

Facebook Messenger application is one of the social

messaging application that took over as the most popular way to

connect with friends, family and businesses. It became as an easy and

cost-effective way for people to communicate.

Facebook Messenger make daily communication between

family members, friends, and fellow student. This application connects

directly to Facebook Messenger chatting system, so people can send

12

and receive messages more quickly than if they were going through a

mobile browser. This is because messaging system appears

immediately on the screen of a user’s preferred device. Although,

Facebook Messenger uses data, users can send texts and pictures

without accessing those costs.

The researchers chose this as their study because it is

helpful to those who use Facebook Messenger Application. The purpose

of this study is to determine the impact of Facebook Messenger

Application to the respondents as regards to their age as well as

gender and their perception of the impact of Facebook Messenger

Application to them.
13

LITERATURE REVIEW

Raina, Alam, Siddiqui (2010) according to them, the word

communication stems from the Latin word Comunicare, meaning to

share, to have in common. A closely related Latin word, communion

(communication in English), means fellowship or holding in common.

Thus, from earliest times, communications have meant to share, to

partake, to exchange, to hold in common.

Communication is an intentional effort to transfer the required

information, ideas, and emotions in an accepted form and structure

towards a recipient who on receipt of it, uses his/her background

culture, experience, perception, and knowledge to make sense out of

it, and in turn, follows the same procedure to respond.

Communication is unavoidable activities that facilitates our day to day

activities by the virtue of verbal and non-verbal mechanisms, which as

matter of fact, are used both consciously and unconsciously during our

routine transactions.

Iksan et al. (2012), communication skills are defined as a person’s

ability to provide information that is easily understood by

others,Communication skills are divided into three types, namely

writing, verbal and social skills.

14

Ramey (2013) stated that technology has changed the way we

interact and communicate with others. With the increase use of social

based networks, people can create new relationships and also discover

old friends. With technology, parents can communicate and keep track

of their children. So communication has become easier and cheaper.

Technology has transformed the way we communicate; it has created

a big impact in how friends interact with each other.

Sarokin (2019) noted that the internet made it possible for one

person to reach hundreds or thousands of others with very little cost

or effect.

The number of people that an individual can communicate with on a

daily basis is quite large due to the presence of the Internet.

Przybylski and Weinstein (2013) stated that recent advancements

in communication technology have enabled billions of people to

connect more easily with people great distances away, yet little has

been known about how the frequent presence of these devices in

social settings impact face-to-face interactions.

Scarpati and Rouse(2017), according to them instant messaging,

often shortened to IM or IM'ing, is the exchange of near real-time

messages through a stand-alone application or embedded software.

Unlike chat rooms with many users engaging in multiple and

15

overlapping conversations, IM sessions usually take place between two

users in a private, back-and-forth style of communication.

Instant messaging differs from email in the immediacy of the message

exchange. IM also tends to be session-based, having a start and an

end. Because IM is intended to mimic in-person conversations,

individual messages are often brief. Email, on the other hand, usually

reflects a longer-form, letter-writing style.

Larson (2016) stated that instant messaging (IM), form of text-

based communication in which two persons participate in a single

conversation over their computers or mobile devices within an

Internet-based chat room. IM differs from “Chat,” in which the user

participates in a more public real-time conversation within a chat room

where everyone on the channel sees everything being said by all other

users.

Wigmore (2016) stated that Facebook Messenger is a mobile app

that enables chat, voice and video communications between the social

media site's web-based messaging and smartphones.

Messenger Team (2017) stated that billions of people now use

messaging as their preferred way to connect with the people and

businesses they care about, from sending a note to tell someone they

miss them and in sharing an inside joke; from wishing someone a

16

happy birthday to saying they're thinking of them during a tough

time.

Messaging is a core part of everyday life: 80 percent of adults (age 19-

64) and 91 percent of teens (age 13-18) across the globe message

every day. There has been an increase in the amount of

communication over the past two years: People have increased their

usage of various channels, but the top five include messaging (67

percent), social media (48 percent), email (47 percent), video chat (47

percent) and face-to-face (38 percent) communication.

According to Munoz (2013) communication technologies provide

young individuals and adults the opportunity to choose from diverse

social communication channels to communicate and maintain their

existing relationships. With advances in electronics, children and

adolescents have the opportunity to engage in communication

technologies to socialize with others, and as time goes by,

communication technologies (i.e., instant messenger, text messaging,

and social networking sites) will possibly become integrated in their

daily activities and social life.

Marquez (2003) concluded that some students use IM for 23 hours a

week while others use it for 1 hour. Although some people paint the

use of IM as having adverse consequences, there is such a variety in

17

the use of IM that it is too easy to simplify instant messaging as only

being good or bad for the students’ social lives. Social or anti-social

behaviors are not directly caused by instant messaging: IM simply

enhances the students’ social habits. More accurate portrayal of

instant messaging is that it actually is a unique tool of communication

that affects everyone differently depending on their personality and

social nature.

Dr. Subramanian (2017) noted that digitalization has reduced the

face to face interaction of human beings whether it is for marketing or

promoting a product or a personal communication. The mobile phone

has created a social situation whereby people are getting used to

avoidance of person to person communication by switching over to

mobile.

Drago (2015) stated that in field observations, a survey of 100 Elon

students, and an analysis of previously conducted studies provided

evidence that the rapid expansion of technology is negatively affecting

face-to-face communication. People are becoming more reliant on

communicating with friends and family through technology and are

neglecting to engage personally, uninhibited by phones and devices,

even when actually in the presence of others. A majority of individuals

felt the quality of their conversations degraded in the presence of

technology, and many individuals were bothered when friends or

18

family used technology while spending time together. Additionally,

nearly half of the survey respondents (46%) communicate more

frequently with friends and family via technology than in person,

indicating strongly that face-to-face interactions have decreased both

in quality and quantity.

19

Research Instrument

According to Iksan et al. (2012) Communication has three types

namely writing, verbal, and social skills. The researchers formulated a

survey questionnaire divided into three parts. The first part is the

Writing Skills, the second part is the Verbal Skills, and the last is the

Social Skills. The questionnaire is in a form of checklist and the

respondents can check 'always', 'sometimes', 'seldom', and 'never'. It

also consists of another question which can be answered by ‘very

good’, ‘good’, ‘bad’, and ‘very bad’. The survey questionnaire has a

total of sixteen (16) questions.

23

Research Procedure

Gathering of Data

The researchers sent a transmittal letter to the school directress

and principal to conduct the study in Consolatrix College of Toledo

recommendations.

Summary

The purpose of this study is to know the profile of the

respondents, the impact of Facebook Messenger Application, and their

perception towards the impact.

Findings

After undergoing a careful and critical analysis of the gathered

data, the researchers came up with the following;

A. Profile of the Respondents. Majority of the Consolatricians were

18 to 19 years old. In terms of sex, there were fifteen (15)

males and fifteen (15) females.

B. Impact of Facebook Messenger Application.

1.1 Writing Skills. The study showed that majority of the

respondents are always using correct words, punctuation marks

and grammar when communicating via Facebook Messenger

Application. Most of the respondents answered that they always

learn new words and they read and edit their message before
45

sending it via Facebook Messenger Application. Majority of the

respondents that they sometimes use acronyms or abbreviations

when chatting in Facebook Messenger Application.

This indicates that Facebook Messenger Application encourages

the Consolatricians to follow or use the correct words, spelling,

punctuation marks, and grammar when writing messages. In

addition, communicating through Facebook Messenger

Application enhances their vocabulary and reading

comprehension as they practice reading and editing their

messages.

1.2 Verbal Skills. The study showed that majority of the

respondents answered that sometimes they speak fluently, give

importance to their tone of voice, and feel confident with their

verbal skills when communicating online via Facebook Messenger

Application. A greater number of respondents answered that

they always make sure their messages are clear when talking

and they always find comfort in communicating through voice

and video chat in Facebook Messenger Application.

This indicates that Facebook Messenger Application enables the

Consolatricians to give importance to their speaking ability,

voice tone and conveyance of message. Although they are not

46

always confident with their verbal skills when communicating

through Facebook Messenger Application, they are comfortable

and are able to communicate at ease.

1.3 Social Skills. The study showed that majority of the

respondents answered that they always communicate with their

family, friends, acquaintances, etc. in person than in Facebook

Furthermore, they always express themselves and they feel

more comfortable in person than communicating in Facebook

Messenger Application. A greater number of respondents

answered that they sometimes engage themselves in

conversations even though they use Facebook Messenger

Application.

This indicates that Facebook Messenger Application does not

hinder the interpersonal communication of the Consolatracians.

Although they don’t always engage themselves in person to

person conversation, they still use nonverbal cues and express

themselves more. Furthermore, despite using Facebook

Messenger Application, they still prefer communicating in person.
