The CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Problem and It’s Background

There’s a connection between facebook and academic performances of the students.

Facebook can be use in order to us to easily communicate and get important
infoemation and also, Facebook can be the key for every students to be more active in
terms of socialization. Facebook are usually expand because it is a popular app, we can
get an information through facebook from your friends to gather some data. As a social
networking site, it offers online platform on which users create profiles, generate and
share content , information and interact with other known and unknown contacts.
Facebook can be harmful effects on productivity and task performance, Long hour spent
on Facebook seems to decrease student’s academic performances and thus their
grades. Students spend an average of 30- 35 minutes per day surfing facebook. Even
though they consider the website distracting and time consuming these students note
that they cannot quit visiting it every single day, because they like it and use it to keep
contact with their friends, family , whether they encounter them every day or not. The
nature and terms of these connection may vary from site to site . Social Networking Site
(SNS) have become instrumental for providing free, user friendly access for
communicating with others over the internet. Facebook has quickly grown to become
one of the most popular SNS worldwide. Facebook was originally created as a vehicle
for students to create and maintain social ties that were relevant to the university
experience.Consequently, a user’s attraction to and involvement in activities on the
social platform likely means greater concentration and time spent following updates and
news. Information shared also pertains to all areas of daily life, which makes websites
such as Facebook a mine of information that anyone can explore and enlarge. Although
users experience delight and enjoyment when interacting with others on these networks
and appear to be in total command of this activity, they may lose control over other
tasks that they are expected to perform. Time flies while they are absorbed in the joy
and curiosity produced by these websites, and no time or effort is left to conduct other
tasks.

Statement of the Study

The purpose of the study is exploratory in nature with the intent provide greater insights
for future research shows that Facebook influence students in the way that it is powerful
tool of the individual to communicate entertained and interact to the events .

How facebook affects the academic performances of the selected Grade 10 students of
GLTNHS?

How often a student waste their time on Facebook in every day ?

What does Facebook bring to the lives of the the students?

Chapter II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
A. Local Literature

This chapter presents the gathered information from different sources. These studies
will be used as a guide and support to our research. Our related literature starts with the
information about Facebook as well as the possible effect that might affects the
students when Facebook is being used extensively.

Unfortunately, Filipino students have abused the advantages that Facebook

extends tothem and they have been using it without caution and moderation. Eventually,
Facebook has greatly affected their academic lives. Generally, Garcia (2011) stated that
Facebook usage haveapparent effects, both positive and negative, on students. In 2010,
Kirschner and Karpinskifoundthat Facebook usersspent less time in studying and they
had lower grades than those who did notuse SNS. However, the study of Kabre and
Brown (2011) and Rosen (2011) showed that Facebook usage has no effect on
academic performance of students.

Aside from being the texting capital of the world, after the introduction of internet,
the Philippines has the highest number of internet users in the “16 to 24” age groups
who join socialnetwork groups (Cadiao, 2011).Apparently, this condition is worsening as
internet services have been reaching far-flung municipalities in the country.
The widespread Facebook addiction in the country can be explained by various
factors whichconstantly influence Filipinos. Elvin(2010) and Radwan (2011)cited in their
internet articles thatunfulfilled social needs and social approval are some of thereasons
of social networkingaddiction. In an economically depressed country like the Philippines,
there are many socialissues that have not been resolved through the years and one of
which is prostitution. However, through Facebook and other social networking sites,
victims of these social odds which are sometimes unaccepted in their community can
easily socialize and they contribute to theincreasing number of Facebook users. Aside
from the social problems which cause Facebookaddiction, Elvin (2011) added that the
availability of Facebook on mobile phones alsointensifiesthe cases of this type of
addiction. The country has been nicknamed as the texting capital of theworld several
years ago and now surveys revealed that Philippines has the highest percentage
ofFacebook users in relation to its total number of internet users
(facebookphilippines.ph). These surveys only show thatmobile phone hasits part in the
worsening Facebook usage in the country.

A comScore market research on 2011 showed that Philippines has the highest
percentageof Facebook (FB)users in relation to the country‟s internet users with 93.9%
of out the 29.7% ofinternet users (facebookphilippines.com). On May 2011,based on the
statistics by Socialbakers,24 500 920 Facebook accounts were already created by
Filipinosand the country ranked no. 3with the most number of new Facebook sign-ups
on April 2011 with 1.3 million new accounts” .Another astonishing statistics by
braincontour.com (2012)also showed that the numberof Facebook usersin the country
had grown by 78% from November 2010 with 18 million toApril 2011 with 23 million
users. Currently, the Philippines ranks no. 8 in Facebook statistics bycountry with over
27 593 300 Facebook users (Socialbakers.com, 2012).Although internetservices are not
yet available in far-flung areas of the country, these statistics show thatFacebook
penetration in the country is worse than we actually imagine.
By the end of January 2012,Socialbakers released another statistics which
showedthat27.62%of the Philippinepopulationor 92.91% of Filipino Internet users are
Facebook users.Italso illustrated that the number of FB users in the country grew by
more than 1 356 040 in thelast six months (from August 2010 to January 2012).Based
on statistics of FB users‟ age distribution in the Philippines, the largest age group is
currently 18 – 24, which is composedmostly of college students, with total of 10 761 387
users and the 13-17 age group has a 19%share of FB users which is reflected in the
diagram.

Facebook being at the forefront of the social media craze, has over 500 million active
users on its website every month. It is emerged on February 4, 2004, when a 19-year-
old sophomore Harvard student named Mark Zukerberg founded the revolutionary site
to connect Harvard University students (Grossman, 2010). But later, this site allows
users to build social networks with hundreds or even thousands of people around the
world of which university students are one of the primary demographics using
Facebook, with features such as photos, wall posts, and status updates becoming
seemingly irresistible to those who want to connect with their friends (Gold, 2011).

Even though Facebook is by now used by a much wider variety of users, university
students are still its “biggest fans”. Results from a recent paper Ellison et al. (2007)
reported that 94% of College students are active Facebook users, spending 60-90
minutes online each day communicating with their Friends List of 150–200 people.
Similarly, Wiley and Sisson (2006; as cited in Pempek et al, 2009) conducted a large
survey on college students from universities in the developing countries indicated that
91% of students use the Facebook. Ethiopia is also as one of developing countries has
intoxicated with around one million users of Facebook in which half of them are higher
education students (Kassashow, 2012)

Though this social network generates billions of dollars for the developer and assists to
contact a relatives detached for long period of time within fraction of seconds, it has
impact on the users in general and on students’ academic performance in particular. So,
this research assesses the impact of Facebook usage on Students’ Academic
Performance in Wollega University.

In the paper entitled “The influence of social networking sites on students’ academic
performance in Malaysia” by Adam Mahamat Helou and Nor Za irah Ab. Rahim, they
tried to study the students’ perceptions on the use of social networking sites and its
influence on their academic performance. They found most of the respondents do feel
that the SNSs have more positive impact on their academic performance due to its use
for various academic activities such as communicating with the faculty and university
authority, communicating with lecturers and supervisors, making academic discussions
with classmates and chatting with friends in respect to topics of educational interest

Nicola Cavalli Et al. in his paper “Facebook influence on university students’ media
habits: qualitative results from a field research” found that nearly half of them were
unfamiliar with facebook site and contrary during 2009 all of the respondents were
aware and about 59% of them use it regularly.

In the paper “Effects of social network on students’ performance: A web-based forum

study in Taiwan” the researcher investigated the effects of social networks on the
performance of students’ online education. They found that students who are more
active on facebook have positive effect on their academic performance.

In a study of “Lessons from Facebook: The Effect of Social Network Sites on College
Students’ Social Capital” by Sebasti n Valenzuela2, and Kerk F. Kee4 University of
Texas at Austin they examined that there exists moderate relation between intensity of
facebook usage and life satisfaction, social trust, civic participation and political
engagement of students.

In the paper “The relationship between facebook usage and academic performance” – A
study at Ohio state University by Aryn Karpinski and Adam Duberstein (Ohio Dominican
University) found that facebook usage was associated with lower GPAs, and less time
studying. Those who use facebook tended to have lower GPAs than those who did not,
and it appears from the slew of articles written about it, that within the group that used
facebook that more usage was associated with lower GPAs and less time studying.

A study on “The Benefits of Facebook ”Friends:” Social Capital and College

Students’ Use of Online Social Network Sites” by Nicole B. Ellison,Charles Steinfield
and Cliff Lampe examines the relationship between use of Facebook, a popular online
socialnetwork site, and the formation and maintenance of social capital. The study
suggested a strong association between use of Facebook and the three types of social
capital, with the strongest relationship being to bridging social capital.

INTERNATIONAL

Students used Facebook to maintain their former network of high school friends
and also to build and sustain bonds with new friends on their campuses. ( Ellison et al…
2007, 2011; Junco & Matrodicasa, 2007).

According to McPherson (2014) , Social capital is related to improve self-esteem

fewer psychological ang behavioural problems, and improved quality of life .
Pascarella & Terenzini (2005) , Furthermore increased social capital can help
students feel free more of a connection to their institution, which is related more
positive.
Upcraft , Gardner , Barefoot , Associates (2005 ), As students transition into
move through college, they have to develop new skills in order to be successful.

According to Manca & Ranieri (2013), Facebook has been the most platform
for teaching ang learning they discovered 23 emprical studies of using Facebook
as a learning environment.
