Pattern Notes
Terminology
This pattern is written in American crochet terminology, which differs from British terminology in some
instances. The following table of terms used in this pattern will help should you wish to translate one to the
other.

Color Changing

Gauge (Tension)
Exact gauge is not crucial for this pattern. Just make sure your crochet hook is small enough to create a

Yellow, Light Green, Dark Green, Light Blue and Dark Blue
Bower Seat - Light worsted weight, (DK/8 ply) yarn:
Light Brown (30 g), oddments of Beige, Green, Yellow and Purple
2 2 x 8 mm black plastic safety eyes
3 Polyester toy stuffing
Equipment
1 Large Birds: 3 mm and 2.5 mm crochet hook (Note: use 3 mm hook throughout unless
otherwise specified)
2 Scissors
3 Yarn needle
4 Pin (for marking eye position)
5 Stitch marker
6 Tweezers (for stuffing small or narrow parts)
Note: The small birds shown in the last picture at the start of each pattern were made with a 1.5mm
crochet hook and Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton.
Wings
Wing Panel 1
Make 2 pieces starting at center. Working in continuous spiral rounds.
With White yarn make 2 ch.
Rnd 1 6 sc in second ch from hook. (6 sts)
Rnd 2 2 sc in each of next 6 st. (12 sts)
Rnd 3 [Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] 6 times. (18 sts)
Rnd 4 [Sc in each of next 2 st, 2 sc in next st] 6 times. (24 sts)
Rnd 5 [Sc in each of next 3 st, 2 sc in next st] 6 times. (30 sts)
Rnd 6 Sc in each st around.
Rnd 7 Sc in next st, 3 ch (fig.4), sc in second ch from hook, sc in next ch (fig.5), sc in next st (fig.6),
(Feathers) 4 ch, sc in second ch from hook, sc in each of next 2 ch, sc in next st, 5 ch, sc in second ch from

Wing Panel 2
Make 2 pieces starting at center. Working in continuous spiral rounds.
With White yarn make 2 ch.
Rnds 1-6 Follow Rnds 1-6 of Wing Panel 1.
Rnd 7 Sc in next st, 7 ch (fig.8), sc in second ch from hook, sc in each of next 5 ch (fig.9), sc in next st
(Feathers) (fig.10), 6 ch, sc in second ch from hook, sc in each of next 4 ch, sc in next st, 5 ch, sc in second
ch from hook, sc in each of next 3 ch, sc in next st, 4 ch, sc in second ch from hook, sc in each
of next 2 ch, sc in next st, 3 ch, sc in second ch from hook, sc in next ch, sc in next st, slst in
next st.
Fasten off and weave in the yarn end (fig.11).
To finish each Wing:
With right sides facing outwards, match Wing Panel 1 with Wing Panel 2. Starting with the
feathers, oversew the edges of Rnd 7 together (fig.12) then sew the back loops only of Rnd 6
together (these will be the loops closest to each other) (figs.13-14). Place the wings at either
side of the body so the top of the wings are between Rnds 12 and 13 with the longest feather
at the top and all feathers pointing backwards. You can rotate the wings so that the feathers
are angled downwards, upwards or horizontally depending on your preference. Once happy
with the position sew the rounded part of each Wing to the Body using parallel stitches first
into the Body (fig.15) then into the Wing just underneath the leftover loops from where you
sewed the two sides together (fig.16). Pull firmly each time you make a stitch so that the
leftover loops will lie snugly next to the body. Do not sew down the part with the Feathers
attached (figs.17-18).
Tail Feathers
Make 2 pieces starting at tip. Working in continuous spiral rounds.
With Light Yellow yarn make 2 ch.
Rnd 1 6 sc in second ch from hook. (6 sts)
Rnd 2 [Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] 3 times. (9 sts)
Rnd 3 [Sc in each of next 2 st, 2 sc in next st] 3 times. (12 sts)
Rnds 4-5 Sc in each st around. (2 rounds)
Rnd 6 [Sc in each of next 2 st, invdec] 3 times. (9 sts)
Rnd 7 Sc in each st around.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.
Lightly stuff each Tail Feather. Pinch the end of each Tail feather flat then sew shut. Weave in
the yarn tail on one of the Tail Feathers. Stack on top of each other and sew the flat seams
together (fig.22). Sew the joined flat seams to the center back of the bird between
Rnds 25 and 27, placing stitches all the way around the front, sides and back of Tail for extra
stability. Finish off by sewing the back of the uppermost Tail Feather to the Body so that it
points upwards (fig.23).
To Finish
* With Light Blue yarn sew a stitch directly next to the back of each eye.
* With doubled up Light Yellow yarn sew a stitch under each eye spanning 2 sc.
* Sew underside of tip of Beak to Body.
Lovebird
Wings
With Dark Green Yarn follow pattern and instructions for Cockatoo Wings (page 5).
Feet
With Mid Orange Yarn follow pattern and instructions for Cockatoo Feet (page 7).
Tail Feathers
Make 2 pieces in Dark Green and 1 piece in Light Green, starting at tip. Working in continuous
spiral rounds.
With Dark Green/Light Green yarn make 2 ch.
Rnd 1 6 sc in second ch from hook. (6 sts)
Rnd 2 [Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] 3 times. (9 sts)
Rnd 3 [Sc in each of next 2 st, 2 sc in next st] 3 times. (12 sts)
Rnds 4-5 Sc in each st around. (2 rounds)
Rnd 6 [Sc in each of next 2 st, invdec] 3 times. (9 sts)
Rnds 7-8 Sc in each st around. (2 rounds)
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.
Do not stuff. Pinch the end of each Tail Feather flat then sew shut. Weave in the yarn tails on
two of the Tail Feathers. Stack on top of each other with the Light Green Tail Feather in the
middle and sew the flat seams together (fig.27). Sew the joined flat seams to the center back
of the bird between Rnds 25 and 27, placing stitches all the way around the front, sides and
back of Tail for extra stability.
To Finish
* With White yarn sew a stitch directly next to the back of each eye.
* Sew underside of tip of Beak to Body.
Wings
With Dark Brown Yarn follow pattern and instructions for Cockatoo Wings (page 5).
Feet
With Dark Yellow Yarn follow pattern and instructions for Cockatoo Feet (page 7).
Tail Feathers
With White Yarn follow pattern and instructions for Lovebird Tail Feathers (pages 9-10).
To Finish
*With Light Brown yarn sew horizontal stitches in and out of consecutive sc on front of Body
between Rnds 16 and 24.
*With Black yarn sew a small eyebrow 1 round above each eye.
Beak
With Peach Yarn follow pattern and instructions for Cockatoo Beak (page 5).
Wings
With Dark Gray Yarn follow pattern and instructions for Cockatoo Wings (page 5), changing to
White yarn at Rnd 7.
Sew the Wings together using matching colored yarn ends.
Feet
With Peach Yarn follow pattern and instructions for Cockatoo Feet (page 7).
Tail Feathers
With Light Gray Yarn follow pattern and instructions for Cockatoo Tail Feathers (page 7).
Head Feathers
Large Head Feather
Make 1 piece starting at tip. Working in continuous spiral rounds.
With Light Gray yarn make 2 ch.
Rnd 1 6 sc in second ch from hook. (6 sts)
Rnd 2 Sc in each st around.
Rnd 3 [Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] 3 times. (9 sts)
Rnd 4 Sc in each st around.
Rnd 5 [Sc in next st, invdec] 3 times. (6 sts)
Rnds 6-10 Sc in each st around. (5 rounds)
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.
Do not stuff. Pinch base of Large Head Feather flat and sew closed. Weave in the yarn end.
Medium Head Feather
Make 1 piece starting at tip. Working in continuous spiral rounds.
With Light Gray yarn make 2 ch.
Rnds 1-8 Follow Rnds 1-8 of Large Head Feather pattern.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.
Do not stuff. Pinch base of Medium Head Feather flat and sew closed. Weave in the yarn end.
Small Head Feather
Make 1 piece starting at tip. Working in continuous spiral rounds.
With Light Gray yarn make 2 ch.
To Finish
* With White yarn sew a stitch directly next to the back of each eye.
* Sew underside of tip of Beak to Body.
Budgerigar
Beak
With Light Yellow Yarn follow pattern and instructions for Cockatoo Beak (page 5).
Beak Flash
Pull up a loop of Dark Blue yarn in any st on edge of Beak. 1 ch (counts as a slst) (fig.34), sc in
each of next 4 st, slst in next st (fig.35). (6 sts)
Fasten off. Leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.
Stuff Beak and with Beak Flash at the top, sew Beak to Head using matching colored yarn ends.
Tail Feathers
With Dark Blue Yarn follow pattern and instructions for Lovebird Tail Feathers (pages 9-10).
To Finish
* With Light Yellow yarn sew a stitch directly next to the back of each eye.
* With Black yarn sew two horizontal running stitches under each eye between Rnds 13 and
14. Sew a horizontal running stitch 2 sc long behind one of the Eyes between Rnds 6 and 7 and
another between Rnds 7 and 8. Sew a final horizontal running stitch 3 sc long underneath the
first two between Rnds 8 and 9. Repeat behind the second eye.
* Starting at center of each Wing use Black yarn to sew running stitches in and out of
consecutive sc of top Wing Panel only, until you reach the end of the last full round of the
Wing (fig.36).
* Sew underside of tip of Beak to Body.
Hoopoe
Beak
With Black Yarn follow pattern and instructions for Cockatoo Beak (page 5).
Wings
Starting with White Yarn follow pattern and instructions for Cockatoo Wings (page 5),
changing to Black yarn at Rnd 2 then alternating in stripe pattern of 1 round White followed by
1 round Black to end of Rnd 6. Continue in Black yarn for Rnd 7.
Tail Feathers
Starting with Black Yarn follow pattern and instructions for Lovebird Tail Feathers (pages 9-10),
changing to White yarn at Rnd 5.
Head Feathers
Large Head Feather
Make 2 pieces starting at tip. Working in continuous spiral rounds.
With Black yarn make 2 ch.
Rnd 1 6 sc in second ch from hook. (6 sts)
Rnd 2 [Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] 3 times. (9 sts)
Rnd 3 Sc in each st around.
Change to White yarn.
Rnd 4 Sc in each st around.
Rnd 5 [Sc in next st, invdec] 3 times. (6 sts)
Change to Mid Orange yarn.
Rnds 6-9 Sc in each st around. (4 rounds)
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.
Small Head Feather
Make 2 pieces starting at tip. Working in continuous spiral rounds.
Rnds 1-8 Follow Rnds 1-8 of Large Head Feather.
Stuff the Head Feathers. Sew open end of one of the Large Head Feathers over Rnd 1 of Head.
Sew second Large Head Feather directly behind first Large Head Feather. Sew a small Head
Feather in front of first Large Head feather and sew the second Small Head Feather behind
second Large Head Feather.
To Finish
* With White yarn sew a stitch directly next to the back of each eye.
* With Black yarn sew a running stitch 2 sc wide, 2 rounds above each eye.
* With Peach yarn sew running stitches over Rnds 14 and 15 spacing them 2 sc apart. Sew a
second row of running stitches over Rnds 16 and 17 spacing them 2 sc apart.
Bower Seat
Note: You will need 4 lengths of something stiff to stuff the crocheted tubes of the Twig Struts with. I used
3 plastic straws that were 8 mm) in diameter and 8 ½ for the seat and another straw
cut cm) for the top of the Bower Seat. You could use pieces of dowel, unsharpened pencils,
tightly rolled thin card or anything else suitable if you prefer. A tube of 8 sc fitted my straws perfectly but if
you are using something slightly thicker or thinner then adjust the stitch count by one or two until you get a
comfortable fit.
Spacers
Make 6 pieces. Working in continuous spiral rounds.
With Light Brown yarn make 2 ch.
Rnd 1 6 sc in second ch from hook. (6 sts)
Rnds 2-3 Sc in each st around. (2 rounds)
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for finishing. Stuff the Spacer. Thread yarn tail onto yarn
needle, pick up front loop only of all 6 stitches. Pull tight to close the hole. Fasten off, leaving a
long yarn tail for sewing (fig.37).
Sew the ends of two of the Spacers each end of one of the Seat Struts.
Sew a third Spacer at the middle point between the end two Spacers. Repeat on the second
Seat Strut (fig.38). Sew the other ends of the Spacers to the middle Seat Strut (fig.39).
Hanging Cords
Make 2 pieces.
Rnd 1 With 2 strands of Beige yarn held together and leaving a long yarn tail at the beginning, make
60 ch. Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for finishing.
Thread the yarn ends from one end of the first chain onto a needle and insert under two
stitches on underside of Hanging . Pull through
until there are equal amounts on each side. Repeat with the second hanging cord on the
opposite end of the Twig Strut (fig.40). Tie the yarn tails of the Hanging Cord around the end of
each of the outermost Twig Struts next to the outside edge of the Spacers, leaving the tied
ends dangling (fig.41). Cut 2 lengths each of Purple yarn, Green yarn and Yellow yarn
(15 cm) long. Thread these onto a large yarn needle and thread the lengths
of yarn under a stitch on the underside of the front Seat Strut directly underneath the Hanging
cord (fig.42). Pull through so that both sides of the yarn lengths are roughly the same and trim
