CHAPTER 4

THE MATERIAL OF PROCEDURE TEXT

What is PROCEDURE Text?

1. It’s a kind of text which tells us what to do in steps. Usually we use the
procedure text when we want to make something, use, do or fix something.
2. Texts that explain how something works or how to use instruction /
operation manuals e.g. how to use the video, the computer, the tape recorder,
the photocopier, the fax.
3. Texts that instruct how to do a particular activity e.g. recipes, rules for
games, science experiments, road safety rules.
4. Texts that deal with human behavior e.g. how to live happily, how to
succeed.

The Generic structure of the procedure text

1. The first part is the GOAL, it is about what you want to do.
2. The second part is THE MATERIALS, or what you need to create the
finished product.
3. And finally, the last part is THE STEPS, or what you need to do to get to the
goal.

Language Features
1. In a procedure, it is common to use the simple present tense in the form of
imperative. Imperative sentences are used to tell people how to do things or
give instructions.
2. To do so, start instructions with the infinitive. Imperatives also come in
positive and negative commands.
3. Positive tells you to do something while negative tells you not to do
something.
Example of Positive Imperative:
Wash some rice in cold water
Drive it carefully
Switch on your computer

Example of Negative Imperative:

Don’t step on that!
Don’t speak during the test!
No touching!
