Air Compressor

This document contains 8 problems related to air compressors. Problem 1 asks to calculate the cylinder bore of a single-acting, single-cylinder compressor. Problem 2 asks to calculate the indicated power of a single-stage reciprocating compressor. Problem 3 asks to calculate the motor power required to drive the compressor from problem 2 accounting for mechanical efficiencies. Problem 4 asks to calculate the power requirement of a two-stage air compressor given its torque and rpm.

Air Compressor
1- A single-acting , single-cylinder compressor is driven at 300 rpm and takes 1 m3 of air per
minute. Calculate the cylinder bore required, assuming a stroke to bore ratio of 1.5 / 1 .
o
2- A single-stage reciprocating compressor takes 1 m3 of air per min. at 1.013 bar and 15 C and
1.35
delivers it at 7 bar. Assuming that the law of compression is PV = const., and that clearance is
negligible, calculate the indicated power.
3- Calculate the power of the motor required to drive the compressor of problem ( 2 ) if the
mechanical efficiency of the compressor is 85 % and that of the motor transmission is 90 %.
4- A two-stage air compressor runs at 600 rpm and requires a torque of 70 N.m to drive it.
What is the power requirement ?.
5- In a single-acting two-stage reciprocating air compressor , 4.5 kg of air per min. are
o
compressed from 1.013 bar and 15 C through a pressure ratio of 9 to 1 . Both stages have the same
1.3
pressure ratio, and the law of compression in both stages is PV = const. If inter-cooling is
complete, calculate the indicated power.
3 o
6- A single acting air compressor draws in 6 m /min. of air at 1 bar and 20 C , and delivers it at
1.35
9 bar. The compression follows the law Pv = C. Neglecting clearance, compare the indicated
power required if the following methods are adopted :
(I) Single stage compression ,
(ii) Two stage compression with perfect intercooling ,
(iii) Two stage compression with same intercooler pressure as in (ii) but the cooling is not
o
perfect and the temperature of intercooled air can be brought to 25 C.
[ Assume for air R = 287 J/kg-K ]
o
7- A three-stage single-acting air compressor running in an atmosphere at 1.013 bar and 15 C
o
has a free air delivery of 2.83 m3 / min. The suction pressure and temperature are 0.98 bar and 32 C

1
respectively. Calculate the indicated power required, assuming complete inter-cooling , n = 1.3 , and
that the machine is designed for minimum work. The delivery pressure is to be 70 bar.
8- A single-stage single-acting air compressor is required to deliver 7 m3 of air per min.
o
measured at 1.013 bar and 15 C. The delivery pressure is 7 bar and speed 300 rev / min. Take the
clearance volume as 5 % of the swept volume with a compression and expansion index of 1.3.
Calculate the swept volume of the cylinder, the delivery temperature and the indicated power.
