Elements are the simplest type of matter and are made up of only one type of atom. Each element has unique properties. Some elements are metals, others are gases, and some are semiconductors. Compounds are combinations of two or more elements and have properties that are different from the individual elements. Compounds can be broken down into their constituent elements through a chemical process. Elements and compounds make up all matter around us.
